JOHN D. McKINLAY

McKINLAY JOHN D., of Bloomfield Hills, MI. Died on January 14, 2013 at the age of 81. Beloved father of John R. Stewart M. Scott W. (Amy) and James P. (Stephanie). Grandfather of Andrew, Colin, Copper and Emma Lucille. He was preceded in death by his identical twin brother Arthur F. (2009) and is survived by sister Mary Ann Holthaus of Alexandria, Virginia. He is survived by his longtime companion Patricia Muenstermann of White Lake Township. Born in Detroit he was a graduate of Cooley High '50 and a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He was a graduate of Boston University, B.B.A. and the University of Michigan program in Real Estate Management. He was a long time realtor/appraiser and past president of the Birmingham Bloomfield Board of Realtors and at one time sat on the Oakland County Board of Commissioners. He was a two time Olympian in the sport of rowing. He was on the 1952 US Olympic team in Helsinki Finland and on the 1956 US Olympic team in Melbourne Australia. Rowing out of the Detroit Boat Club with his twin brother Art McKinlay they won a silver medal in the 1956 Olympic's. During his 13 year rowing career he competed in the USA, Canada and Europe winning 5 US Rowing Championships, 8 Canadian Henley Championships. He was captain of the crew at Boston University. He retired from rowing in 1963. He is inducted into the Boston University Athletics Hall of Fame and the National Rowing Hall of fame. Burial will be at White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, MI.
