BARRY LORENE E. A week before her 96th birthday, and surrounded by her family, Lorene Elyzabeth Barry was called home to her heavenly father. She was born January 7, 1917 in Port Huron to Clara and Lt. Harvey F. Forbes. Lorene was the beloved wife of the late John D. Barry. She is survived by her son Mike, daughter-in-law Mary, and two grandsons Michael and Nicholas Barry. Lorene worked at Michigan National and First State banks. She was a strong, independent, young at heart woman, with impeccable taste. She loved shopping, knitting, dining out, and just being on the go. Above all she loved and lived for her family. BRADFIELD KATHY OSSMAN Died unexpectedly and peacefully October 31, 2012. Predeceased by husband George Bradfield and survived by daughter Blair; sisters Juanita and Raymona; brothers Gay, Nito, and Tim; and many nieces and nephews. Kathy was an "Old Black Bottom Detroiter" attending Barstow Elementary, Miller High, and Wayne State University. She taught at the George, Longfellow and Stewart Elementary Schools. She worked tirelessly for children in DAPCEP and her beloved Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. Always known for her unusual voice and distinctive gait, Kathy in early years was active in several local drama and cultural groups. Her energy and opinions were legion. She possessed an indefatigable wit and hated to miss anything. She was a poet, actress, adventuress, intrepid traveler, and raconteur and became a devotee of African American Art. She appreciated fine jewelry and furs, yet was the epitome of thriftiness and pragmatism. Kathy was unique, peerless and so special to her family and many friends.

DOW THERESE A much loved St. John Hospital nurse, mother, wife, sister, grandmother (Mimi), aunt and friend to countless, passed away on January 3, 2013 after a long, brave fight against cancer of the brain. Therese was born Therese O'Sullivan on May 26, 1940 in Port Huron, Michigan along with her twin sister Mary. She graduated from St. Steven High School in Port Huron, in 1958, where she was captain of the basketball team. She graduated from St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing in Ann Arbor in 1961 and embarked on a fifty year career as a registered nurse at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. In 1966 she moved to Detroit to begin a career at St. John Hospital in Detroit. Her first job was as the Head Nurse for the first Intensive Care Unit at St John. She married Stuart Dow in 1969 and became a mother to Sarah Dow in 1970 and Laura Dow in 1972. After her children were born she switched to working part time as a nurse in the St. John emergency room. After her first granddaughter was born in 2002 in California, she retired from St. John and started working contingent in the occupational health department at St. John, so she could be free to travel to California as often as she wanted or was needed. She dedicated her life to helping other people as a nurse, wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. A doctor who worked with her in the E.R. said Therese was amazing. No matter how dire the situation, she treated every one the same, with dignity and compassion. Another doctor said Therese represented all that is good in the world. One of her many friends said "She was like a sister to so many of us". Therese is survived by her husband of 43 years Stuart Dow her two daughters Sarah Dow Reimers (John) of Venice, CA, and her daughter Laura Dow Coon (Zachary) of Plymouth, MI. She is also survived by her sister Mary Selinger (Dr.Harold) of Charleston, West Virginia, her brother John O'Sullivan of Denver, Colorado, and her eight grandchildren, Molly, Stuart, William and James Reimers and Nathan, Aaron, Elijah, and Isaac Coon. She is also survived by 23 nieces and nephews and their children. She was predeceased by her father Federal Judge Clifford O'Sullivan and her mother Theresa O'Sullivan, her brothers Patrick and Thomas O'Sullivan, her sister Sheila Keelan, her sister-in-law's Maureen O'Sullivan and Caroline Dow-Covert and brother-in-law Jack Keelan, and niece Mary Catherine Dykhouse Stuligross, and nephew David R. Selinger. Therese was a woman of faith, a lifelong Catholic and a member of St. Paul on The Lake Catholic Church since 1977. FORD JOHN BATTICE III 88 of Grosse Pointe Farms, died Monday December 31 at his home in Vero Beach, FL. Mr. Ford was a graduate of St. Paul's School and Yale University. His professional interests were in the import/export trade. He served in the United States Coast Guard during World War II. Among his many volunteer contributions were as Chairman of the Boards of the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology, The American Red Cross Southeastern Michigan Chapter, University Liggett School Alumni Association and Detroit Grand Opera Association, and as a member of the boards of Northern Michigan Hospital Association, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Detroit Institute of Arts, Cottage Hospital, Jennings Memorial Hospital, Leader Dogs for the Blind and Metropolitan Opera Association. Mr. Ford was a life-long member and past Senior Warden of Christ Church, Grosse Pointe, and also served as Senior Warden of St. John's Episcopal Church, Harbor Springs, Michigan. Mr. Ford was a member of Country Club of Detroit, Grosse Pointe Club and Yondotega Club, as well as John's Island Club, Vero Beach, Florida and Little Harbor Club, Harbor Springs, Michigan. Mr. Ford was predeceased by first wife, Mary Lou McDonald and brother, Gordon Tanner Ford. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Peggy Powers Gotfredson Ford, son John B. Ford, IV (Sarah) of Norfolk, Virginia, step-sons Lawrence Gotfredson, (Katherine) and Christian Gotfredson, grandchildren Lisa Voeks, Kimberly Ford, John McDonald Ford, James Ford, Kelly Mathews, Lawrence Gotfredson, III, Hannah Gotfredson, Trevor Gotfredson and seven great-grandchildren. GALPIN HELEN MARIE (STEVENSON) October 17, 1915. December 16, 2012. Helen passed away quietly at her home. An amazing woman, a role model to her family and friends, and a life well lived. Born and raised in Vancouver, B.C., daughter of Bertram and Maryanne Stevenson (Cook), and younger sister of Douglas Coney Stevenson. After college, she married Richard Galpin and after World War II they moved to Detroit so Richard could complete his Pediatric training. A devoted mother, she raised four children: Kenneth, Peter, Lindley and Sheila. She was a graduate of UBC (Vancouver, British Columbia) in Social Work. After raising her family, she returned to graduate school and received her Masters Degree in Social Work from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan). After divorce, she returned to B.C., had a full career as a medical social worker at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops, BC and retired to Comox on Vancouver Island. A woman of incredible spirit, an avid traveler and sailor her adventures were legendary: solo-trekking the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan, sailing to the Queen Charlotte Islands, road trips to Mexico were but a very few of these. Her love of art and music and a compulsion for community service led her to found art centers, jazz festivals and kite festivals in the Detroit area as she raised her family. She is survived by her children: Peter, Lindley, and Sheila. Her grandchildren: Karen and Amy Wilmot, Thyra Carnes and Nedra Meredith, Akira and Mikiko Galpin. Her great-grand-children: Walter, Ella, Daniel and Samuel. A devoted lover of animals she was companion to furry-feathered-family to her last days.
