LEWIS INEZ ALLISON Beloved mother of daughters Shawn D. Lewis and Mimi L. Lewis, passed away January 23, 2012 at Henry Ford Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was 87. She loved designing clothes so much as a child, she took a pair of her father's trousers and cut them up to make doll dresses. "She'd later laugh and tell us she wondered how she thought she could get away with it, without her father realizing his trousers were missing," said daughter Shawn D. Lewis, a Detroit News reporter. Mrs. Lewis's designing talents became well-known across Metro Detroit and she began assembling a select clientele of customers and often presented fashion shows locally, including at the Detroit Institute of Arts. A skilled artist, she also hand-painted designs on furniture and painted murals on bulletin boards for her former husband's classrooms where he taught in Detroit Public Schools. She was a graduate of Pershing High School and attended Wayne State University. But she was most proud of being published. She was an avid reader, teaching her daughters Shawn and Mimi to read at the age of 3, and religiously followed current events. She began writing editorials related to current events in her 70s, and several were published in The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press. One editorial in The Detroit News: "An Open Letter to Tiger Woods, "Be True to Your Diverse Heritage," was read online by DePaul University professor David A. Jolliffe. He wrote to The Detroit News requesting permission to reprint her editorial in a college textbook he was writing, teaching college students how to rite. Her editorial now appears in the college text "Inquiry and Genre: Writing to Learn in College." Jolliffe shows students how to write an open letter taking apart each paragraph of her article. "She was the epitome of love and generosity," said her daughter, Mimi. "She once gave the gloves off her hands to a person who had no gloves, while walking home in a snowstorm, and another time, walked to a local hardware store to buy a wagon for our paperboy so he wouldn't have to carry them on his back." In addition to her daughters, survivors include brother, Kenneth Allison, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by six siblings and former husband, Samuel Lewis. Services will be private.
