ROWE LEONE ANN "LEE" (NEE WALD) 79, died on Wednesday, 20 February 2013, in Port Townsend, Washington, while in the company of her two loving sons. Lee was born in Detroit, graduated from Detroit Central High School in 1951, and received her BA and Master's degrees from Wayne State University. A pioneer in electronic library technology, she was at various times a librarian and archivist at Solidarity House (UAW Headquarters), the Archives of American Art, and Wayne State. After moving to East Lansing in 1971, she created the Learning Resources collection at Lansing Community College. She was happy to retire from Michigan State University in 1998, picking up and making a new life for herself in Port Townsend, where she immediately bought a 1957 Thunderbird convertible, the Pink Lady. Surrounded by books at work, she was also surrounded by them at home: Faulkner was her favourite author, and in her final weeks she was reading Stendhal. Lee was a feminist, a lifelong Democrat, and a strong supporter of unions. One of her email signatures was "Never for the sake of peace and quiet deny your own experience or convictions" (Dag Hammarskjöld). Another was "Life is unpredictableeat dessert first!" Lee was predeceased by her father Peter Barry Wald, mother Rose Ida Wald (nee Smofsky), sister Carol Sondra Wald, and beloved friend Beverly Koti. Surviving are her son Gregory David Rowe, of Victoria, British Columbia, her two beautiful granddaughters, Esther Marie and Hannah Bessie Morand, and her son Matthew Owen Rowe, of Port Townsend. During her last years, she enjoyed the company of her perky Pomeranian Marco, and was grateful for care and assistance from Hospice and other caregivers, and especially for the dedicated help of her son Matthew. Lee's ashes will be scattered from a spot on the shore of Lake Michigan where she once beheld the Northern Lights. At her request, there will be no local services. Memorial gifts may be given to the Jefferson County Hospice Foundation, Compassion & Choices of Washington, or the Humane Society of the United States.
