CRAWFORD JOY LEWIS, 87 years old, passed away April 10, 2011. She was the perennial bride of Marvin L. Crawford for 62 years, and mother to Joy Tamara, Marvin David and Eric Lewis Crawford. She grew up and lived in the same Detroit neighborhood all her life. A trip to the 1933 Chicago World's Fair sparked her love for travel, which carried on throughout her life. In the ensuing years, she traveled with her family to Europe, South America, and Africa, as well as locations throughout the U.S. She valued the experiences as a window into other cultures and ways of living. She was witness to a nighttime Apollo rocket launch in Florida, visited the pyramids in Egypt and was once chased by a rhinoceros in Kenya. She was educated at Howard University, and earned a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry from Wayne State University. When the U.S. Navy announced in 1944 that Negro women would be accepted in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) as part of the war effort, she was one of the first three in the country to enlist. During the last twenty years, she served on the Volunteer Council for the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and for the last many years, she enjoyed the company of her girlfriends at regular monthly luncheons. Among her favorite charities were the United Negro College Fund, the NAACP, the DIA, her church, Plymouth United Church of Christ in Detroit, where she was a member for the last 60 years, the Detroit Concert Choir, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra.
