AWKERMAN WARREN RAYMOND Age 98, went to be with his Lord and Savior on May 7, 2013 in Alvin, Texas with his loving family by his side. He was formerly from Westland, Michigan. Warren was born in Thamesville, Ontario, Canada to John Henry Frank Colling and Beatrice Colling (O'Neal) on February 9, 1915. Warren and his mother moved to Detroit in 1921 where he lived most of his life. He spent summers with his grandparents in Thamesville, Ontario until 1932. Beatrice married Sheridan Wallace Awkerman in 1921 and Warren was adopted by Sheridan Awkerman in 1924. He graduated from Northwestern High School in January 1933 and attended the Detroit Business Institute where he graduated with a degree in Accounting. He began working at Garwood Industries in 1935 as a Cost Accountant until leaving after 35 years. Warren was self-employed until he began driving dealer trades for Tom Holzer Ford, reluctantly retiring at the age of 91. Warren was a long-time member of Calvin Presbyterian Church where he was ordained as a Deacon and Elder and served faithfully on many committees during his 40 plus years at the church. Warren met the love of his life, Ida Lucille Frizzell and they were married in October 1941. She preceded him in death in July 1960. He is survived by his five loving children, Terry (Theresia), Bonnie Hamill (Dan), Ken (Brenda), Linda Thiesen (the late Ron), and John (Julie). He was a loving grandfather of 21, great-grandfather of 30 and great-great-grandfather of one. He will be dearly missed and will forever live in our hearts. A celebration of Warren's life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 8, 2013 in the Chapel at Presbyterian Village of Redford, 25300 W. 6 Mile Road, Redford, Michigan located between Telegraph and Beech Daly, with the Reverend Jim Conley officiating. A meal will be served immediately following the celebration at the same location. CZUBKO CHESTER "CHET" Age 90, of Jackson passed away on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Allegiance Health. Surviving are his children, Chester (Mary Anne) Czubko, Jr. and Ann Hall; grandchildren, Nicholas, Chester Joseph "CJ", Erin Schmidt and Carrie (Joe) Burns; great grandchildren, Jeremy, Evan, Collin and Olivia; siblings, Myron (Tessie) Czubko, Jennie Weiler and Leo (Bernie) Czubko; brother-in-law, Robert Vogt; sisters-in-law, Joanna Czubko, Dorothy Krzyaniak and JoAnn Rachwal; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Music was a very important part of Chet's life. He played in many bands throughout his life starting, before age of 18. His music included playing in the high school band, a band while in the service during WWII and his family band, Chet's Combo. He was an inductee into the Michigan Polka Music Hall of Fame and was a former President of the American Federation of Musicians. He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the choir. He loved hunting and fishing, and spending time with his family at his cabin up north. Chet was at the Lauer Family Funeral Home in Jackson where his family received friends on Tuesday 5-8 p.m. with a Rosary at 6:00 p.m. A prayer Service was held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Chapel in Jackson with Fr. She taught wine classes over seventeen years at Macomb Community College, The Renaissance Club and the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. She worked in sales and then as office manager of the family wine business A.H.D. Vintners. Bonnie possessed strong organization skills and felt deeply about giving back to the community. She was involved in many community organizations and had served as President of several (IBEX, Pointe Garden Club) and on the Board of others. HORRIGAN GAVAUGHNE "GAE", formerly of Brooklyn, Michigan and Topeka, Kansas, passed away May 30, 2013 after a 12-year battle with ovarian cancer. Gae was born on July 6, 1945 in Pikeville, Kentucky to the late David C. Williamson, Sr. and Opal McCown. She is survived by her loving husband, Jim; her children Amanda Y. Schelling of Grand Rapids, MI, D. Darren Baggett of Harrison Twp, MI, and Phillip C. Baggett (Kira) of Cape Coral, Florida; two grandchildren (McLaren and Addison); siblings, Joy Cox and Jack Williamson; and many nieces, nephews, and her beloved dog Tammy. Gae grew up in Willow Run Village, MI after her family moved from Pikeville, KY in the 1950s and graduated in 1963 from Willow Run High School. Nothing gave her more pleasure than spending time in Michigan, Texas and Florida with her children, grandchildren, family, classmates and friends. She "retired" from her various entrepreneurial ventures to allow more time with family and friends, involvement with the Red Hat Society, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She is preceded in death by her parents; three brothers David C. Williamson, Jr., Lewis (Blink) Williamson and James Williamson and son-in-law John Schelling. The family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Daniel E. Lehane, Dr. P. Julie Nguyen, Dr. Creighton Edwards, their staffs, The Methodist Hospital Group, and ManorCare Health Services for the compassionate care they provided to Gae. The family is most grateful to the many friends who brought joy to Gae's life and supported her, especially her special friends Gay Barnett and Bennie Venters. MANDL JAMES MATHEW, "JIM", age 65, of Clinton Township passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013 due to complications from cancer surgery. He was born March 31, 1948 in Grosse Pointe Farms. Jim was a retired real estate appraiser having worked for NBD. He was a member of Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Roseville, where he was a member of the Ushers Club and was a past president of the H.I. Men's Club. He coached track, soccer and softball. He was a very proud blood donor, having donated nearly 11 gallons in his life. Jim was a wrestling historian and contributor to many wrestling websites and blogs. He was an avid fan and season ticket holder of the Detroit Tigers. He was a 1971 graduate of Wayne State University. He graduated in 1966 from Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, where he continued to volunteer at events and fund raisers until 2005 when the school closed. He was one of only six N.D. Betsy graduated with honors, Grosse Pointe South High School, '72. B.A. in Fine Arts, University of Michigan, '76. Teacher, professional artist, volunteer, Betsy cultivated enduring relationships with family and friends through her sweet thoughtfulness and easy manner. Her life included a 17-year span in Seattle, where she worked with children and later supported sister Debby's company. Betsy was a talented artist. Her watercolors reflected her love of the outdoors, inspired by her daily walks and the beaches of Lake Michigan. While her own faith was challenged countless times in the past four years while facing breast cancer, Betsy retained an extremely positive perspective prior to finding her peace. PICKL RUTH ELIZABETH, 87, died Sunday June 2, 2013 in Greensboro, NC. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 7 at 1:00 p.m., at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Ann Arbor, MI, with a reception to follow. An elegant and sweet lady, Ruth was born November 16, 1925 on a chicken farm in Kingsville, Ontario. She graduated from University of Western Ontario and spent her working years as an R.N. in public health in the United States. She belonged to the Pi Beta Phi sorority and was the Alumni House chairman in her later years at the Michigan Alpha Chapter where she received the Golden Arrow for her service. Historic preservation and antiques were her passion and she was involved in saving the Kempf House Museum in Ann Arbor, founded two chapters of the Questers: in Jackson and Ann Arbor, and served on the board of the Washtenaw County Historical Society. She became a naturalized citizen before she married Joseph Pickl, Jr. on August 11, 1951. She is survived by her daughters, Linda of Greensboro, NC and Barbara of Middleton, WI, and granddaughter Bonnie Belew Mellish of Cincinnati, OH. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Jr. and sons Jim and David. A vibrant woman, she was active most of her life. Shirley was instrumental in organizing the Moravian Homeowners Association in 1967, was very active in Sterling Heights Politics, former owner of Metro Ceramics Studio in Roseville as well as operating the concession stand at the Sterling Heights Ball Park. Shirley loved collecting Depression Glass and loved being around her children and grandchildren. She mostly enjoyed spending an afternoon at the casinos in her later years. Beloved wife of Harry.
