PETERSON HARRY S. JR. June 8, 2011. Died at his beloved Mullett Lake home of complications from cancer. He was 75. Harry was born February 5, 1936 and raised in Highland Park, Michigan, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1953. He attended St. Lawrence University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, completing an industrial management degree in 1959. At St. Lawrence, Harry met Julie Anne Joslyn and they married in 1959. She died in 1986. Harry married Madeleine Wytiaz in 1990. They were together for 22 years. In 1959, Harry joined the family waterproofing business, the Harry S. Peterson Company. With his brothers Chuck and Patrick, Harry helped the company grow and prosper before selling the business in 1987. From 1991 to 2009, he owned and operated Lee Grande Ranch with Madeleine. Under their stewardship, the ranch grew to be the largest American bison operation in East of the Mississippi. Their sale of the property to the State of Michigan ensured that it will forever be public open space. Throughout his life, Harry was an avid hunter and angler. He spent thousands of hours in the field pursuing the 'wily' ruffed grouse with his English Setters and dozens of friends. He and his partner won the inaugural National Grouse Hunt in Grand Rapids, Minnesota, in 1983 and repeated in 1984. Harry excelled at downhill and cross-country skiing. He was a member of the MIT ski team. He loved golf, playing and watching all year long. Despite a perennial short backswing, he excelled at golf, winning tournaments and club championships in Michigan and Florida. Perhaps his favorite golf experience was playing Augusta National Golf Club in 2007. Another favorite avocation was wood carving; his specialty was wooden pigs of all sizes. He gave away literally hundreds of carvings as gifts. Harry was a dedicated fan of Detroit and Michigan sports teams, particularly the Red Wings and Michigan State Spartans. Harry is survived by his wife, Madeleine; son Kevin; daughters Heidi and Molly; step-daughters Natalie and Emily; seven grandchildren; sister Sally; and bothers Patrick and Thomas. A gathering to celebrate and remember his life will be scheduled sometime this summer in the Detroit area. Contributions in Harry's memory may be made to the Mullett Lake Area Preservation Society, P.O. Box 18, Mullett Lake, MI 49761. Online condolences may be made at www.stonefuneralhomeinc.com.
