HANSEN ROBERT E. Of Harrison Township, died peacefully at his winter home in Pompano Beach. Florida, surrounded by family, on May 31, 2013, twenty two days before his 90th birthday. He was the beloved husband of 60 years to Jane (Ewing). Dear father to Sybil (Wallis), Robert Jr. (Deborah) and William (Cindy). Fun loving grandfather to Susan Vergilio (Al), David Wallis, Evan (Susannah), Neil (Danielle), Ella and Naomi Hansen and great-grandfather to Seth and Sophia Vergilio. Born in Detroit, June 22, 1923, Bob was a deal-making, jitterbugging WWII Navy veteran who finally learned a slow dance for Jane when she captured his heart and married him in 1954. He helped those who needed it, was a friend to many and a genuine good time waiting to happen for all who made his acquaintance. In between his first dance at the Vanity Ballroom to his last dance with Jane on her 83rd birthday, Bob twirled, dipped and could "shake a leg" with every lady who was willing or occasionally caught by surprise. If you did not know him, you missed out on someone who was very special and lit up our lives in every way. A private celebration of his life is being planned for later this summer. KUHN EDWARD J., age 89, of Waterford; passed away peacefully on June 20, 2013; born December 28, 1923. Mr. Kuhn was a graduate of Central Michigan University. Mr. Kuhn taught for 37 ½ years in the Hazel Park School District, most of those years at Hazel Park High School, where he has endowed several scholarships for graduating seniors. For more than 30 years, Mr. Kuhn chaperoned young men, women and adults on a three-week trip to Alaska, often assisting them with the expenses of the trip. A lifelong bachelor, Mr. Kuhn is survived by his brother, Judge Richard D. Kuhn (Sally), sisters-in-law, Randy, Mary, Anne, Doris and Pat, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his parents: Dr. Charles F. Kuhn and Ella Meinke Kuhn; brothers: Charles, Albert, John, Henry, Robert, George and Paul; and sisters: Helen Frisbie and Clara Belle Graham. Following his retirement in 1989, Mr. Kuhn enjoyed traveling the world, often with AAA Michigan. He was a member of the 60+ exercise group at Oakland University and a life member of the Waterford Senior Center. For the past several years, Mr. Kuhn resided at Canterbury-on-the-Lake in Waterford, where he enjoyed participating in many social events and activities. He was a long-standing member of Metropolitan United Methodist Church in Detroit. SWARTZ ANTHONY "RAY" Passed away June 6, 2013, 9 days after his 99th birthday. Ray was born on May 28, 1914 in Cairo, Ohio to the late Jacob and Hannah Mae (Machamer) Swartz. He married the late Ruth (Shatzer) Swartz, his grade school sweetheart, in 1937. His sisters, Marie Rauschenbach and Pauline Naylor, and his brother, Richard Swartz, preceded him in death. He graduated from Middlebranch High School in 1932 and went to Michigan in 1935 to get "a little sock money" to become a "shade tree mechanic" back in Ohio. Ray stayed in Michigan where he was the Assistant Superintendent of the Melt Shop for Jones and Laughlin Steel (originally Rotary Electric Steel) when he retired in 1977. He belonged to Birmingham Lodge No. 44 (Past Master and Treasurer), Scottish Rite Valley of Detroit, Detroit York Rite College No.1, Moslem Shrine, High Twelve Club #87, Clawson-Troy Elks, Senior Mens Club and First Presbyterian Church of Birmingham, Michigan. Ray moved back to Ohio in 2002 where he belonged to Blendon Lodge No. 339, Westerville Community Center and attended Peace Lutheran Church of Gahanna, Ohio. Through the years he enjoyed golfing, bowling, yard work, fishing, spectator sports and exercising, especially on the rowing machine. Ray will be missed by his many friends for his smile, honesty and integrity, kindness and compassion, and welcoming personality. He will be especially missed by his beloved family-daughter, Carolyn Royer, grandchildren, Patricia (Richard) French and Michael (Rebecca) Royer; great-grandchildren and other relatives. Services will be held in the Chapel of the Flowers at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery, Troy, Michigan, June 29 at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Westerville Community Center (Fitness Room), 350 N.
