COOPER JOHN HAROLD Age 94, passed away Sunday, August 12, 2012. He was born in Muskegon, MI on July 31, 1918 to Burt and Trena (Wierengo) Cooper and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Panamint as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class and Captain's Driver from April 29, 1944 to January 25, 1946. Mr. Cooper had been a newspaper pressman primarily at the Muskegon Chronicle and Detroit News. He was a member of Unity Reformed Church and enjoyed woodworking, bowling, golf and riding his bicycle around Glenside. Mr. Cooper's family wish to thank the employees of LifeCircles, Christian Care and Agape Home at Blueberry Fields for their care of Mr. Cooper in recent years. CRUMPTON MELANIE BETH (JOHNSON) of Battle Creek, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 10, 2012. She was born in Battle Creek on July 17, 1943 to Arthur and Esther Johnson. Melanie attended Battle Creek Central High School and continued her education throughout her lifetime, attending many classes to update her skills, including computer classes at Glen Oaks Community College. She was employed at Duke Air Force Base from 1978-1981 as an executive secretary. She also worked at the U.S. Postal Service as a rural route carrier from 1994-2007. Having lived in Taiwan as a military wife, Melanie enjoyed travel and learning about other cultures. She had visited many states and countries, including Jamaica and Thailand. She expressed her joy of gardening each year by growing an array of colorful flowers, as well as creating a one-of-a-kind beautiful morning glory trellis. She loved her Yorkshire Terrier dogs, including Prissy, Toto and Posy. Melanie's husband, Lyndell W. Crumpton, passed away on April 25, 1985. She had a special companion, Lupe Rangel for many years, who passed away in 2008. Her siblings, brother, Clark R. Johnson, sister, Sally J. Pontius and brother, Alan Douglas Johnson survive her. Also surviving are her children, Brett A. Audette (Pam Smelker), Angela M. Darling (Murray) and Roman L. Crumpton (Melanie). Melanie has five grandchildren, Kirsten, Taylour, and Devan Audette, Corinne and Sam Crumpton. Many loving nieces and nephews also survive her. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Shaw Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where services will take place at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Steve Olmstead officiating. LeGROVE RUTH A., 98, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Friday, August 10, 2012. She was born June 28, 1914, in Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of William N. Willis and Leah Yankey Willis. Ruth was a lifelong resident of Michigan, joining her daughter in Virginia in 2005. While in Michigan, Ruth was the editor of The Backstretch magazine, a publication of the United Thoroughbred Trainers of America. She began with the organization in the late 1950s and continued for more than 30 years, retiring in 1990. She is survived by her son, James P. McDonald and his wife Carolyn of Farmington Hills, Michigan, and her daughter, Bonnie K. Bull and her husband Donald of Moneta, Virginia; her two grandchildren and their wives, Michael and Deborah Bull of Patrick Springs, Virginia, and John and Kimberley Bull of Nashua, New Hampshire; and two great-grandchildren.
