BAK WALTER M. "WALLY" Passed away on September 26, 2012 from a long battle with lung cancer. Beloved husband to Stacey (Orlanski). Brother of Ted (Carol). Uncle to Tom and Ryan, and cousin to Deanna and Barbara. Also survived by a wonderful friend, caregiver to Wally and daughter Kimberly and four beautiful grandchildren. He worked as an automotive engineer for over 30 years. He enjoyed classic car shows, watching and playing baseball, and most of all loved to talk and tell stories. BALLARD CLYDE "Honey" was born May 1st, 1925 in Kentucky and died October 23rd, 2012. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Nata Lee Ballard, and four daughters, Debra, Susan (Leslie) Peterson, Dawn (Robert) Chism, Lisa (Phillip) Mailey. He is also survived by five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 25th, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Royal Oak. KANTERS JOHN P. Age 81, October 20, 2012. Beloved husband of Mary Frances for 60 years. Dearest father of Karen (Gregory). Also survived by many nieces and nephews. John's entire career was dedicated to public service. Shortly after earning a master's degree from the University of Michigan he entered the U.S. Army and after discharge became a career Civil Service employee of the City of Detroit. After several years with the Budget Department as an analyst his special talents were recognized by Mayor Cavanagh who appointed him Budget Director. He continued to serve Mayor Gribbs and Mayor Young as the director of various departments throughout his career. Following a 35 year career his desire to serve continued even after retirement. He was elected to represent his fellow retirants on the Board of Trustees of the General Retirement System of the City of Detroit and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Retired City Employees Association. Upon relocating to Sterling Heights he became a member of the Property Tax Board of Review in that community. Funeral Friday 12 Noon at the A.H. LAUER ALDEN ROBERT Age 94 of Detroit, passed away October 20, 2012. Beloved husband of 60 years to his late wife Elizabeth (Beck) Lauer. He was preceded in death by his son Carl. Alden is survived by his sons David (Judy) and Robert, and daughter Margaret; also nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and a host of very close nieces and nephews. Robert was an all-star athlete at St. Anthony High School, a Speed Skater, Barrel Jumper and Ballroom dancer. During the depression, he hopped freight cars to visit the west coast. He was an Electrical Supervisor at Chrysler, had an electrical business on the side, and was a "Jack of all trades". Alden worked hard until the end, always inspired by the poem "Don't Quit". PFEIFLE THOMAS F., SR. Age 78, passed away with his family due to heart disease on October 9th, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital, in Wilmington, DE. Tom was born July 18th, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan to John and Virginia Pfeifle. Tom graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and went to the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship until suffering a knee injury in his sophomore year. He transferred to Western Michigan University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration and where he met the love of his life, and future wife, Sonja Sue Axtell. Tom started his career at the Ford Motor company where he was Account Manager in its parts services business. He later joined the Maritz Company where he earned several accolades including being the company's top performing Area Sales Manager for over 30 years. His line of work ensured he traveled the world and his favorite destination was Paris, France where he developed a connoisseur's palate and lifelong passion for fine red wine. In his spare time he also owned the Bay Window Restaurant and Theatre in Caseville, MI. Tom's most important role in life was being a dad. Having grown up without a father he ensured that he was a provider, mentor, and ultimately a best friend to his children. His love of family and life extended to all who knew him. Tom is survived by his sons, John and Daniel and their wives, Teresa and Elizabeth, daughter in-law Jean Pfeifle, grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, Kate, Nicole, Tess, Grace, Alexander and Maxwell, and great-grandchild Cody. He was preceded in death by his wife Sonja, daughter Penny, and son Thomas Jr. A memorial luncheon will be held from 12-3 p.m. on Friday, October 26 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial in the Alger House. SELTZER IRENE G., age 86, of Kerby, Oregon died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Three Rivers Medical Center. No services are planned. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements. Irene was born November 3, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. She was educated in Michigan and worked as an elementary teacher in the Catholic school system. On December 27, 1945 in Detroit she married Ralph Seltzer. When Ralph's job relocated them, they moved to California where they lived for nine years during which Irene pursued a nursing career. They moved to Selma, Oregon where they owned and operated Great Oak Vineyard. After retirement, they sold the vineyard and winery and moved to Kerby, Oregon in 1996. Irene especially enjoyed traveling including trips to Europe, Japan, South America, and Africa. She also loved to read from her large personal library. Irene is survived by her husband, Ralph Seltzer of Kerby, Oregon; two sons, Andrew T. Seltzer of Los Angeles, California and Martin L. Seltzer of Detroit, Michigan; four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Daniel Seltzer and Suzanne Seltzer.
