AKAGI ELAINE REIKO passed away on October 19, 2012 at the Casey House End of Life Center in Rockville, Maryland from aggressive pancreatic cancer. Her family, friends and supporters will miss her deeply but know she is no longer in pain. Born in Highland Park, Michigan on August 23, 1945; Elaine was the only child of Ben Akagi and Dorothy Kinuko Akagi. Elaine is survived by many Akagi, Nakatani and Yamamoto cousins, as well as a host of friends and admirers of her work as an advocate for both civil rights and children with disabilities. Elaine modeled continuous learning all her life. She graduated from Cass Technical High School, Detroit, in 1963. She attended Wayne State College where she earned a BS in Family Life Studies, a Master's Degree in Special Education, focusing on visual impairments and later an additional Master's Degree in Vocational Education Rehabilitation. Elaine taught in Detroit Public Schools as a Special Education/Visually Impaired teacher from 1974 -1985. She joined the Seattle Public Schools in 1987 retiring in 2010 where she taught special education and ultimately became the Consulting Teacher for the Visually Impaired. Elaine's life was dedicated to her passion for justice born out of the experience of the imprisonment of Japanese Americans during WWII. She joined the Japanese American Citizens League in her teens dedicating the rest of her life to advocating for minorities discriminated against because of their race, ethnicity, religion, color or disability. Her work for the marginalized has been honored by many organizations. Upon her retirement Governor Gregoire appointed her to the Washington School for the Blind Board of Trustees. Just prior to her death, Elaine received the highest award bestowed by JACL, the Ruby Pin and the JACLer of the Biennium Her life legacy is seen in the scores of people she encouraged to be advocates for the disadvantaged and marginalized. Through them her work will continue forward. Her family, friends, and community thank her for her life's work. A Celebration of Elaine's Life will be held on Saturday, December 8th, at the NVC (Nisei Veterans Committee) Hall, 1212 So. King, Seattle, WA 98144. ALTHER GEORGE Accomplished scientist and inventor dies. Born June 1, 1944, died October 22, 2012. George founded Biomin, Inc. in 1986, "a green company" that manufactured filtration media for groundwater and industrial waste water clean up. BARTSON LESTER J. 91, died peacefully in Livonia, Michigan on 18 November, 2012. Son of Lester and Lucy (Anspach) Bartson, he was born in Fremont, Ohio. The family moved to Cincinnati and Toledo before settling in Detroit in the later 1930's, where Lester graduated from Central High. Like his father, Lester was a fine baseball player. He attended Lawrence Tech, was hired by the Ford Motor research laboratory at Greenfield Village, where he met Henry Ford, who took interest in his work. In 1942, he married Marceline J. DeVleeschouwer. They took their honeymoon on Lester's favorite ship, the City of Detroit III of the D&C Line and made their first home in the Pilgrim Apts. on East Jefferson Ave. Lester joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 and saw combat in Borneo, New Guinea, and the Philippines. He returned to Ford in 1946, had a long career at the Rouge Plant, was a member of the American Foundrymen's Society and held an MBA. Lester is survived by his wife Marceline; his eldest son Lester J. Bartson, III and son-in-law Ed Reid of Bridgetown, Nova Scotia; his son Frank of Ann Arbor and Frank's daughters Elizabeth of Eastpoint and Marcy and her infant Jacob of California; his daughter Julia (Bartson) Antal and Julia's daughters Holly and Hilary of Livonia; his sister Doris Mae Preusser of Miami. He was predeceased by his sister Eula Louise Bartson. Lester gave his all for his family. Never was a husband so dedicated, a parent so self sacrificing, or a grandfather more tender. BOZEK EDWARD Age 93, passed away on October 27, 2012 in Palo Alto, California. He was born February 12, 1919 in Detroit to John and Sophia Bozek. DIVEN JEAN D. Age 90, passed away November 22, 2012 at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born on June 18, 1922 in Flint, daughter of the late Ernest and Mary Potter. Prior to moving to South Lyon in 1990, Jean resided in Redford Township for many years. Proud grandfather of Nathin Glass and Emily Lipe. Brother of John Gleason, Chatham, Ontario, Canada. Don was a Registered Professional Engineer and owner of Steel Products Engineering. His work, during five decades, contributed to the changing skylines of both Detroit and Chicago. His favorite projects were the Tetsuo Harano Tunnels in Oahu, and the observatories at Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii. Don also served over 10 years on the City of Novi Planning Commission and its Construction Board of Appeals, helping to guide the early stages of Novi as a city in the late '70s and '80s. His community efforts included countless hours with the Youth Activities Council (YAC) in Northwest Detroit. He was also a member of the Monaghan Knights of Columbus.
