ALEXANDER LEO ELIAS (VOYIATZIS) was born in Greece on December 27 to Alexandros and Chrysanthi Voyiatzis, the oldest of two children. Leo's parents were refugees from Constantinople and immigrated to Greece during the early 1900s. Leo grew up in Pagrati/Vironas area of Athens and was active in the Greek Boy Scouts. Leo was an intensely curious child who loved to tinker with gadgets and mechanical items. This love continued throughout his life. Leo began his journey to the U.S. as a youth aboard the Nea Ellas ship. He first arrived in New Brunswick, Canada and began his college education in pursuit of a mechanical engineering degree. Upon graduation he was employed briefly with Western Electric before moving on to Boeing Aircraft in Seattle. Eventually he moved to Buffalo New York before settling in Detroit, Michigan until mid 2012. During his years in Detroit, Leo was employed at Park Davis Pharmaceutical Company as a Research and Development Engineer before starting his own company, Advance Enameling Inc. It was here that Leo thrived emotionally and personally while running his own company as he had never before. He loved the excitement and challenge of the day to day details until he retired. Leo came out of retirement to help his wife Rita Kostopoulos-Alexander, the love of his life, prosper in her law firm. They worked side by side every moment of the day until his death. Finally, on September 13, 2012 Leo and Rita moved Palo Alto, finally fulfilling their year's long dream of living in California. Leo died on November 8, 2012 after a long illness. Leo was the kindest, most loving man who loved life and always had a smile on his face. He will be missed and loved forever. Leo was the proud and loving husband of Rita Kostopoulos-Alexander. He was the proud and loving father of Lydia (Rajil Kapoor) and Michael (Shannon) and grandfather of Jaya, Ari, Deven, Luca, Malcolm and Fiona. OXFORD RAYMOND EARL "MIKE" was born to Earl and Florence Oxford on August 31, 1935. He was raised in Garden City, Michigan, with his sisters Dorothy and Jeanie. He served in the U.S. Army as a medic, stationed in Germany between the Korean and Vietnam wars. He cherished his wife of 58 years, Carol (Slayton), whom he met at Henry Ford Community College. They raised six children and a dozen dogs over three decades in Westland, MI. Ray spent every minute he could playing with the kids and their friends, shooting the breeze with the neighbors, or relaxing up north at his "ponderosa" in Pentwater. Eventually, he retired from his job as a Quality Inspector for Ford Motor Company at the Dearborn Engine Plant and moved north. Here you would find him hunting, fishing, playing euchre and cribbage, chasing his wife, growing vegetables, bossing the dogs around, getting back scratches, taking dips in the lake, flirting with women, taking care of the property, and "watching the grass grow." He loved having his family, and the friends that often joined them, gather to enjoy time together, especially around a skeet shooter, volleyball net and a campfire. All of his friends were part of the family, too. He was described as generous, hard working, charming, brutally honest, stern, gruff, sentimental, welcoming, firm but fun, an expert storyteller, a family man, no nonsense, and encouraging, especially when it came to getting a good education. He spent his final few weeks in the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans, where he was well cared for, and passed away with love all around him on November 25th, 2012. His memory will live on through his wife, his six children Jaricia (Dennis) Griess, Jeffrey (Mary Karpen) Oxford, Julie (Cliff) Weeks, James Oxford, Jennese Linder, and Jacqueline (Brett) Selleck, a small army of 16 grandkids, his sister Dorothy Minch, his aunts Lavina and Dorothy Swanson, loving nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, several cousins, many friends, and a twitchy but well-meaning dachshund named Nelly. A celebration in Ray's memory is being planned for a later date, likely this summer, around a campfire at the Twin Silos. As usual, all will be welcome.
