BERTRAM HANNELORE age 83 Hannelore, her nickname "Mother Earth" to all who knew her, since she was always the first to help everyone; died at home at age 83 on December 1, 2012. Being cared for by her husband, she died in his arms and he will miss her immensely. His early years were spent in Lansing, Michigan, during which time he studied music in Detroit and has been a resident of Montclair, N. Jersey since 1948. He was a graduate of Michigan State University in East Lansing and of the Juilliard School of Music in New York City. At Juilliard, he studied on fellowship with Josef and Rosina Lhevinne. In 1954, he was awarded the Prix Jacques Durand in piano and the Prix Dinu Lipatti in chamber music at the Conservatoire American at Fountainebleau, where he was a member of the Master Class of Robert Casadesus. Following these distinctive honors, he was invited to make recordings for the Radio-Diffusion Nationale Francaise in Paris. In the USA, his appearances as a soloist with orchestra have included the Detroit Civic Orchestra, the Lansing Symphony Orchestra and others. His first orchestral appearance took place at the age of fourteen under the baton of Izler Solomon. Throughout his career as a pianist he performed in recital on radio in Michigan and at radio station WNYC in New York City. Mr. Present has given frequent recitals in New York, New Jersey, Midwest and Europe. These engagements have included Steinway Concert Hall, the New York Town Club, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Montclair Art Museum and many others. Mr. Present was a professor at Juilliard School of Music and was one of the original faculty members at Montclair State University. At Montclair State University, he attained the longest tenure of any faculty member in the history of the university. He was known as an adjudicator for musical contests throughout the state as well as in New York. He was a longtime member of the New Jersey Music Educators Association. Beloved son of the late Nathan H. Present and Clara Davis Present. Devoted nephew of the late Edith Davis. SCHANZ LARRY KARL, D.O. Passed away December 2, 2012 in Garden City, Michigan. He was born February 19, 1935 in Ann Arbor, MI to Karl and Helen (Raymond) Schanz. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Yvonne (Drow) Schanz of Northville, MI; his brother Raymond of Ypsilanti, MI; and his four children Perry (André Wilson), Ann Arbor, MI; Diane (Steve Miller), Sequim, Washington; Donald, Livonia, MI; and Carol, Livonia, MI. Larry graduated in 1961 from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Surgery in Kirksville, Missouri, practiced as a Certified Family Physician for 35 years in Westland and Livonia, MI, and was much beloved by his patients. In the late 1960's/early 70's, he raced an MG Midget in Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) races (and won regularly!) He volunteered as team physician for the Cherry Hill High School football team for several years in the late 1960's, and as track physician for SCCA regional races in the early 1970's. After retirement, Larry loved spending time outdoors in northern Michigan in summer, and fishing and crabbing in Florida each winter, as well as building and flying RC airplanes. He loved good vodka, good wine, good food, and salvaging perfectly good 5-gallon buckets from the side of the road. The family wishes to thank the staff at Garden City Hospital in Westland, MI for their kindness and dedicated care. A memorial service will be held at a date to be determined. He was an Attorney, a former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and an accomplished athlete.
