SHIRLEY F. BONNING (NEE LaGEROULD)

BONNING SHIRLEY F. (NEE LaGEROULD) passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 in Big Rapids, Michigan at the age of 89. Shirley was born in Detroit, Michigan on October 3, 1923 to Burr and Minnie LaGerould. She was raised in Hazel Park, Michigan and graduated from Hazel Park High School in 1942. She married her husband William L. Bonning in 1946. Bill and Shirley recently celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary on July 6. During World War II, Shirley worked as a supervisor at Michigan Bell Telephone and later became a proofreader and associate editor for the Lake Orion Review and Oxford Leader newspapers. She retired from the Oakland County Legal News. Shirley loved to travel and hike. On her retirement, Shirley and her husband Bill traveled extensively throughout the United States, visiting 47 states, as well as Europe, China, Mexico, and Canada. Her most beloved travel destination was Big Bend National Park where for 11 years she traveled with her husband by rowboat across the Rio Grande to support the villagers of Boquillas, Mexico with medical and educational supplies, food and clothing. It was one of her proudest and most joyful activities. Shirley loved to play the piano; having learned to do so at the age of 13 but she was too modest to play for others. She enjoyed crossword puzzles. However, her greatest love was her husband Bill, her six children, 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Staying true to her Christian faith, she loved unconditionally and always defended those who were criticized. She was a person of great charm and optimism and was always ready with a kind word or bit of encouragement. Anyone who met Shirley instantly fell in love with her. Shirley and Bill raised their family of six children in Lake Orion, Michigan. She was also a long-time resident of Big Rapids, Michigan. She is survived by her husband Bill; beloved brother Norman LaGerould and his wife Carol of Madison Heights; six children, Darlene Freeman (Doug), Chuck (Rachel), Barbara Ballou (Harold), Beverly Bonning (Jeff Lapinski), Christy Bonning-Wall (Tom), and Carolyn Wright-Ruppert (Matt), her many grandchildren, great grand-children and two nephews. BEATRICE FISCUS

FISCUS BEATRICE age 84, of Novi, formerly of Peoria, Arizona and South Lyon. She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Dudley F. Fiscus, step-sons Wayne and Glenn Fiscus, daughter Kathryn Nelson, seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Preceded in death by son David Nelson. Born in Detroit at the beginning of the depression she was the only child of Beatrice and Leo Harry. Beatrice grew up in a close and loving family, dozens of aunts, uncles and cousins gathered regularly in homes close by each other and around campsites along the shores of Lake Huron for many years. Despite hard economic times Beatrice's parents found a way for her to begin piano lessons at age 7. For Beatrice this was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with art. Beatrice played the piano skillfully both personally and professionally her entire life. Beatrice also found artistic outlet in a whole variety of media. This began in 2nd grade when the teacher asked Beatrice to take over bulletin board design, as even promoting her a grade wasn't enough to keep the busy little Bea in her seat. Painting was always a favorite, one of her largest works, a wall mural of a Grecian garden, in a home in Lafayette Park still stands. She also worked in clay and bronze. During later years Beatrice designed and hand constructed quilts. Singing offered another artistic outlet. In the '60s Beatrice belonged to a semi-professional group called the McKenny Choristers. With the Choristers she sang, played the piano and designed and painted set pieces. After retirement she joined both a local branch of the Sweet Adeline's and community groups, where she also arranged and directed. She loved to sit with her grandchildren to play and sing songs. Beatrice attended Cass Tech High School. Her energy and interest in everything lead her involvement in multiple clubs, groups and bands. The Second World War ended and along with the G.I.s Beatrice went off to college. She loved her years at Wayne State University. Bea moved into a dorm, joined a sorority and participated in everything. When she planned a party she not only picked the theme, she also picked the music and designed the invitations and decorations. At the end of college Beatrice married and went to work. She supported her husband as he worked on his advanced degree. Beatrice worked as a teacher for Detroit Public Schools, where she taught until her retirement. She began as an art teacher; over the course of her career she also taught language arts and dance. Politically aware, Beatrice was always proud that she had campaigned for Adlai Stevenson and made sure she cast her Democratic vote in the 2012 Presidential Election. Beatrice took some time off when her children Kathryn and David were born. Suddenly a single mother in 1964 Beatrice went back to teaching. Along with her children Beatrice began dance lessons, learning both jazz and tap. During these years Beatrice began to travel. With Beatrice driving, Kathryn navigating and David trying not to be car sick, the family camped on the east coast, all over the west and in Canada. With a tornado spied coming over the mountains in Loveland, CO, they once broke camp in less than 10 minutes. The '70s brought new interests, including computers. Travel brochures gave way to monitors. As soon as Apple brought computers to classroom in Detroit Beatrice began to learn to write code. As the '80s began Beatrice went back to college, this time to begin a Master's degree in Archeology. Every weekend she'd go off to some dirty pit somewhere to dig and brush for hours, she loved it. Retirement came early as Beatrice remarried. She moved to the Phoenix area with her new husband, Dudley Fiscus. In Phoenix she discovered a new art community to explore, new singing groups, new quilting groups and the exciting world of grandchildren. Beatrice loved being with her grandchildren, both in Arizona and Michigan. Visits included swimming, camping, art museums and just hanging with grandma. In the mid '90s Beatrice and Dudley bought a home in South Lyon, MI. This began the twice yearly trip across county. Beatrice loved to drive. The last few years she drove a Ford Flex, according to her, the best car ever. Sitting way up she was queen of the road. Given a full tank of gas and a map she was always up to a good car adventure. This past year Beatrice and Dudley moved back to Michigan permanently. Beatrice spent time settling into her new apartment, hanging her art, making many new friends and taking up beading. Beatrice with her beautiful intelligence and sparkling dark eyes will ever be loved and missed. Funeral services Friday at 11 a.m. at White Chapel Cemetery. Shiva in Berkley at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Wayne State University departments of art or music.
