WALDEN ROGER S. SR., Died September 17, 2013 at Beaumont Hospital after a long illness. Survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Wendy, and her son, Allen. Born in Des Moines, Iowa to Virgil M. Walden and Ellen Parkey Walden. He attended school in Des Moines and Chicago, then moved to Detroit to live with his aunt and uncle, Lena and Harold Walden. He graduated from Eastern High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on December 7, 1942 (one year after Pearl Harbor). At Fort Huachuca, Arizona in 1943 he volunteered for paratrooper training at Fort Benning, Georgia. and received his wings there in 1944, making history as one of the original "Sweet Sixteen Triple Nickles" the 555-- the very first African-American paratroopers, led by General James Gavin. He was one of the first "Smoke Jumpers" to jump and extinguish forest fires in Operation Firefly in the Pacific northwest. In 1946 he married G. Roberta Hill, the mother of his four children: the late G. Roberta (Robey), Renay, Rogena, and Roger, Jr., He was stationed at Fort Bragg, N.Carolina; Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Bad Nauheim, Germany and the Presidio of San Francisco, and numerous other bases, completing his BA at San Francisco State. He was sent in 1949 to Japan with the 24th Infantry Regiment, and later to combat in Korea, where he was awarded a Silver Star. His last assignment was as Professor of Military Science at Central State in Ohio. He retired from the army in 1966 as a Lieutenant Colonel. His first wife, G. Roberta died in 1968. Mr. Walden then worked for the City of Detroit at the Housing Commission and the Community and Economic Development Department retiring in 1984. He is survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, four sisters and three brothers, predeceased by two brothers and one sister. Colonel Walden will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Arrangements are pending.

A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Born August 31, 1917 in Wheatley, Ontario he was the son of Lawrence E. and Dora L. (Goodison) Martin. He married Marjorie Pitt on September 2, 1939 in Royal Oak. She preceded him in death on May 2, 1991. William was employed as a bus boy by the Sanders Company, sale engineer at Service Conveyer Detroit and then became president and general manager of the Frederick and Company Conveyers Monroe until he retired in the early 1990's. William was past president of the Kiwanis Club, served on the board of directors of Salvation Army and the Monroe Golf and Country Club. He volunteered as a driver for the American Cancer Society and attended Lawrence Tech. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Monroe and Royal Oak and served as an elder at both churches. He was a member of the Nomad Travel Club, enjoyed golfing and after retirement spent much of his time at his home at Torch River. Surviving are his family Robert K. (Donna Conrad) Martin of West Des Moines, Iowa, Nancy (Raymond L) Martin Denne of Royal Oak; grand-children Amy (Robert John) Barickman of Prairie Village, Kansas, Robert C. COLBY CARL FREDERICK 69. Carl passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on November 23, 2013 at MidMichigan Medical Center – Midland after a valiant fight against acute leukemia. Carl, currently of Jackson, Michigan, was born and raised in Midland, Michigan. He graduated from Midland High School, Class of '62. He married his wife Leean June Silberstein on October 30, 1964. Carl served in the Air Force stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. After his return stateside, they lived in San Jose, California until the birth of his oldest daughter, when they moved to Westland, MI. Carl worked as a computer technician and IT support for IBM and Consumers Energy. Carl enjoyed spending time with his three children and five grandchildren at the family cabin fishing, water skiing and relaxing. His hobbies include genealogy research. He served on the board of the Jackson County Genealogy Society and as a delegate to the Michigan Genealogical Council. Carl had a love for life, travel, family and work. He is preceded in death by his parents, Amerst Everett Colby and Mary Elizabeth Conrad Colby of Midland, MI.
