McDONALD F. JAMES President, General Motors Corporation 19811987. June 13, 2010 Age 87 of Vero Beach, FL, formerly of Bloomfield Hills and Harbor Springs. Mr. McDonald was born August 3, 1922 in Saginaw, Michigan to Mary C. and Dr. Francis J. McDonald. He graduated from St. Andrew's school and joined the Saginaw Malleable Iron Division of General Motors as a co-op engineering student attending General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) on alternate work and school months. During World War II he spent his senior college year in the Navy V-12 program at Yale University. After midshipmen school he became a commissioned officer. After submarine training in Key West and New London, he served as Assistant Engineering Officer on the Bergall and Caiman submarines in the South Pacific. Before leaving for the South Pacific, in December, 1944, in Saginaw Michigan, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Dettenthaler who was also in the service as a SPAR, stationed in Los Angeles. After the war they returned to Saginaw and he became a foreman in the foundry. After several promotions, in April of 1955, he was promoted to Plant Manager of the foundry in Defiance, Ohio. In December 1956 he was moved to the Hydramatic Division in Ypsilanti, Michigan as Works Manager, and became General Manager of that Division in 1963, subsequently, after serving as Manufacturing Manager of the Pontiac Division, and then the Chevrolet Division, he was elected a Vice President in 1969 and General Manager of Pontiac. Later he became General Manager of Chevrolet and in November of 1974 he became an Executive Vice President in charge of North America Operations, and a member of the GM Board of Directors. World Wide Operations were added to his responsibilities in 1979 and then he became President and Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Executive Committee in February 1981. He retired from GM in August 1987 after 47 years of credited service. He has been around the world visiting GM's foreign operations. The family moved to Defiance, Ohio in 1955, then to Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1957, then Bloomfield Hills, Michigan in 1966. They moved from Bloomfield Hills in 2001 and bought a summer residence in Birchwood Farms at Harbor Springs, Michigan. In retirement he served on the board of directors of H. J. Heinz, Georgia Pacific, Halliburton, and Kmart. He was Chairman of the Beaumont Foundation, (William Beaumont Hospital), for four years, then Chairman of the William Beaumont Hospital Board for four years. He was also an active member of the board of Up With People, and educational program for worldwide youth with five casts of 100 youngsters each performing throughout the world. He met with Pope John II when a cast of Up With People performed at the Vatican. The Pope called them "a thousand doves of peace". During his life he received honorary degrees from Notre Dame University, Michigan State University, Kettering University, Northwood University, Michigan Tech University, and Cleary College. He always believed in being a generous giver of time and money in the communities in which he lived. He loved family, golf, fishing, flying, and meeting people at all levels. From 1960 to 1969, he owned and flew a Cessna Skylane. His wife Betty also soloed this plane. He had a knack for remembering and telling good stories. In 1970 they purchased vacation property in Vero Beach, Florida, and became permanent residents in 1991. He was a member of Riomar Country Club, Bent Pine Golf Club, Holy Cross Church of Vero Beach, Turtle Lake Club, Birchwood Country Club in Harbor Springs, Michigan, St. Hugo Church in Bloomfield Hills, and had been a thirty-five year member of the Bloomfield Hills Country Club. NEED JUNE E. Age 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday June 12, 2010 at the Bortz Healthcare Center Oakland. A longtime resident of Washington Twp., she was the wife of the late William H. Need. She is survived by her two sons, William R. (Nancy) Need of Rochester MI, and Christopher S. (Marilyn) Need of Perry, MI. (nee Tippett) Wegener. After her sons were out of high school, June entered college and became a Respiratory Therapist, eventually retiring from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She was a faithful member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Shelby Twp, where she was a member of the ECW and the Altar Guild. STADLER GORDON A. Passed June 13, 2010, at age 59. He grew up in Livonia and Farmington Hills, and was a resident of West Bloomfield. He enjoyed a long career in accounting and financial analysis, most recently with Chrysler Financial Services. An easygoing guy with dry wit, he liked a good book, playing classical guitar, golf, a bit of travel, and sharing a laugh. Surviving Gordon are his parents, Shirley and Carl Stadler, as well as sister, Linda Stadler, and brother-in-law and great friend, Thomas Fredericks, of Corona del Mar, California.
