BASLER ROBERT Age 84, passed away on August 15, 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He did not possess much when he emigrated from Vienna to Detroit over 50 years ago, but he did have a beautiful new wife and a dream. Mr. Basler was founder and president of Jason Tool & Die, a successful venture that supplied the Big Three automakers back in the day. In the 1950's he honed his unerring eye and engineering skills in Austria where he worked as a Journeyman in the trade. After meeting his bride, Inge, he set out to Detroit to find the American Dream. Mr. Basler began his career at Dequindre Tool & Die, a family run business where he quickly rose to the rank of Vice-president. "He had a reputation for unsurpassed quality and was passionate about his work," said his son, George, who later partnered with his father in business. Mr. Basler purchased a home in Troy, founded Jason Tool & Die, joined Great Oaks Country Club in Rochester, traveled and drove a fine American car--the dies for which he produced. "To him, that was the definition of success," said his daughter, Corinne Grousbeck. "He was thankful for all that he had." He retired shortly after his diagnosis to enjoy life's simple pleasures and to spend more time with his devoted wife and family. He was often spotted sitting in the shade of his backyard gazebo, listening to Schubert while sipping a glass of wine. He was the beloved husband of Inge for 50 years. Dear father of George (Melanie) and Corinne Grousbeck (Wyc). Loving grandfather of Cassandra, Christopher, Kelsey, and Campbell. Family will receive friends Thursday 2-8 p.m. at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Road (between Maple and Big Beaver). Funeral Service will be held privately. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes to Perkins School for the Blind.
