BOWERMAN FRANCIS EUGENE "MIKE" Age 87, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, April 6, 2012 at Munson Medical Center. Mike was born in Washington Township in 1924, the son of Frank and Rose (Miller) Bowerman. After graduating from Romeo High School, he enlisted in the Army to join the allies in WWII. He served his tour of duty in the Pacific as a B-29 Radio Operator with the 444th Bombardment Group, the first B-29 Superfortress group ever established. After the war, he enrolled at Michigan State University, enjoying success as a pole vaulter while earning a B.S., M.S., and teaching certificate. In 1946, he met Ruth Ann Sattler at MSU, and the two were wed the following year. After graduating, Mike left East Lansing with his wife to begin his career as a teacher and coach in Houghton Lake, where the young couple started to grow their family. Mike enjoyed a successful career as a teacher and athletic coach for two decades, leaving Redford Union High School in 1969 to enter the tool and die business with LaSalle Machine Tool and Acme Cleveland Corporation. In 1979, his family ventured up from Highland Township to Traverse City, where he would eventually retire. Mike was an avid fisherman, sportsman, and farmer who loved being out on the water as much as he enjoyed having his hands in the soil. Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife Ruth Ann on August 9, 2005. He is survived by his son Lawrence Bowerman of Mount.Morris, MI; daughter and son-in-law Susan (Bowerman) and Gregory Worsnick of Chaska, MN; daughter and son-in-law Mary Ann (Bowerman) and Mark Deschaine of Frankenmuth, MI; daughter and son-in-law Janet (Bowerman) and Keith Anderson of Oxford, MI; eleven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and one sister. Gloria is survived by three sisters, 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Every Thanksgiving and Easter for the last 26 or so years her house would be filled with the laughter and joviality of 30 to 40 dinner guests comprised of family and friends. For many of us Easter and Thanksgiving will never be the same. Gloria passed on Easter, her favorite holiday. VERSTRAETE LOIS P. Age 81, of Traverse City passed away on April 7, 2012. Lois was born in Detroit in 1930 and was adopted by Charles and Marguerite (Mathes) Lynch. Lois attended Gesu Catholic School, Immaculata High School and graduated Marygrove College in Detroit with a degree in Psychology & Sociology in 1952. Upon graduation, she was hired by Detroit Edison in the field of Industrial Psychology. She married Joseph L. Verstraete in 1958. Together they raised two daughters, moving from Detroit to West Bloomfield Township in 1968. Lois was a longtime member of Gesu Catholic school and parish in Detroit and later, Prince of Peace Catholic parish in West Bloomfield. Following Joseph's retirement from General Dynamics/Chrysler in 1989, they moved to Traverse City where they became active members of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mapleton. Lois worked for several years at "The Added Touch" and was co-owner of this business, following her passion for arts and crafts. Lois loved cross stitch, flower arranging, theater and crossword puzzles. But more than anything, Lois loved her husband and children. Lois is preceded in death in by her husband Joseph in April of 2000. She is survived by her two daughters, Kathleen Verstraete of Traverse City and Mary C. Verstraete of Akron, Ohio. Visitation for Lois will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 12, 2012, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. The rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 13, 2012, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mapleton.
