RYE JOHN K. April 9, 2012 Age 93. John woke every day with the idea that life was a gift. Behind his energetic enthusiasm for life, his love of people, his generosity, his desire to make the world a better place was his strong faith in God. John Rye was born in Irona, West Virginia on March 9, 1919 to parents George and Fedora. At age five, his family moved from the small mining town to Detroit where they started a grocery store and poultry business. While working long hours in the family business, he graduated from Cass Tech in 1936. He attended Wayne State Engineering for a year before heading north to Michigan Tech. Years later, in 1983 he received an honorary Doctorate of Engineering. There was nothing more important to John than his family. In 1938, he met the love of his life, Rita; they were married four years later on August 8, 1942, and would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this year. He was a supportive and loving father to Karen and Jonathan. He was a caring grandfather to Ben, Calvin, Lauren, Erin and Rob. He was a great-grandfather to Addison, Mac, Malik, Alex, and Cameron. John started out his career as a process engineer for each of the Big Three auto manufacturers and in 1952 bought the F. Joseph Lamb Company, a small tool and die shop in Detroit, Michigan. John grew this company to become one of the leading automated machine tool and welding systems manufacturers in the world. The company was sold to Unova in 1987 with sales approaching $400, 000, 000. John loved to engage with people on a personal level every day of his life. He had the rare ability to always see something interesting and good in everyone. He thrived off sharing what he had learned by constantly giving out books, audio tapes and music. He truly believed that what you give out comes back tenfold and was the first to lend a hand to people in need and usually without even being asked. For instance, for Focus Hope he created and financed a factory to rebuild used transmissions. In addition, he built a Montessori center in Pontiac, Michigan for Baldwin Avenue Methodist Church. He gave quietly for scholarships and medical research over many years. With his joy for living, John touched thousands of lives. Those who would like to share their remembrances or stories about our John can send letters to email@example.com. Memorial service Saturday, April 21st 2:00p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 1589 W. Maple Rd., Birmingham. Memorial tributes to Focus: HOPE or Michigan Technological University. A.J.
