MATTHEWS GEORGE H. Born December 4, 1930, formerly of Riverview and current resident of Pinckney, entered the house of the lord on Friday the 2nd of March, 2012, to be with his beloved wife and family and friends who passed before him. His long, active life, though cut short by pancreatic cancer, was richly filled with becoming an engineer and working over 40 years at ford motor, raising a family of seven kids and one more late arrival, doting on and adoring his wife, as well as finding time for his weekly games of golf and pursuing his passion for woodworking projects. Dad would not let his cancer get the better of him. He accepted his final fate bravely and refused any treatment that would rob him of consciousness and quality of life over his precious few remaining weeks. His last days were filled with visits and phone calls from family and friends, all wishing him well and making him as comfortable as he would allow us to fuss over him. We spent time watching Red Wings Hockey, glimpses of the upcoming Tiger Baseball season, PGA golf tournaments, and The Price is Right. Weekends were filled with nonstop family gatherings and sleepovers, which included great food and hilarious nights of watching the home movies he authored. Yes, he could still fill a room with his laughter. He dreamed of playing one more round of golf, and taking one more trip around Cordley Lake in his newly refurbished pontoon boat, and one more trip to Florida to be with new found friends, and of course, one more visit to the cottage on Portage Lake where our family has gathered for decades of weekend rituals consisting of fun on the water, home cooked meals (he loved Rebel's cooking), and wall to wall-floor to ceiling sleeping accommodations, just inches from people you could never imagine being bed partners with. George is survived by and his legacy continues through a large surviving family of Matthews, Gignacs, Whitlows, Vanderpools, and Vespermans, all too numerous to list, including children and their spouses, grandchildren and their spouses, and great-grandchildren. He also is missed by his wife's family (the Rebel clan and Clark family), his golf buddies, friends from the old Hamann street gang, and current neighbors around his Pinckney residence. May the lord bless him, warmly welcome him to his new home, and reunite him with his wife and our mother, Loretta. Visitation is Sunday, March 4 from 1-8 p.m. at the Girrbach-Krasun Funeral Home (Southgate Chapel) 15748 Fort St. Scripture Service Sunday at 7 p.m. In state Monday 10 a.m. St. Cyprian Catholic Church, 13249 Pennsylvania Rd, Riverview until time of mass at 10:30 a.m., Interment following at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery with Military Honors, www.girrbachkrasun.com
