SILER ROBERT LEONARD 88, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease died on May 14, 2013 in the Palliative Care Unit of the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital. He was born November 18, 1934 in Kansas City, Missouri, to Ray and Eva Siler. Bob was raised in St. Louis, taking his first job as a bicycle rider for Western Union at age 14. He graduated from Normandy High School at age 16 and went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Central Methodist College, his masters from Vanderbilt, and took further coursework at Notre Dame, Harvard, and Syracuse University. An accomplished pianist, Bob formed his own dance band while in college playing on campus and in small towns in the Midwest. Up until three years ago, his talented fingers flew across those ivories to the delight of all who knew him. There wasn't a song that Bob couldn't play and further embellish with his own special touch. Bob was a proud veteran. At age 18, still a junior in college, Bob signed up with the Navy. As a commissioned officer he worked in communication and intelligence systems and served in Miami, in the Pacific along the Philippine Islands, and finally, in San Francisco. During the war, he was also involved in mine sweeping operations in the China Sea. As an educator, Bob was on the staff of Fayette High School as a band instructor where he worked tirelessly to secure instruments for all students interested in joining the band. That meant Bob also had to often repair those instruments to ensure the music program of the high school survived and thrived. He was appointed principal of the high school, their youngest to date. A leader in business, Bob served 55 years in the grocery and consumer products industry. He was Ralston Purina's Vice President of Sales, Distribution, and Administrative Service for all consumer products divisions. He was Vice Chairman and President of Sales Force Companies, a midwest grocery brokerage firm. Finally, he headed his own sales management consulting company, Siler Associates. Bob was past president of the National Society of Sales Training Executives, former speaker and chair of AMA Marketing Council, former chairman of the National Food Brokers Education and Training Foundation. For five years he was senior coordinator for 10,000 supermarkets' participation in the Food Industry Crusade Against Hunger. Bob was also active in Students In Free Enterprise, a program involving 1800 colleges and universities. Bob continued to give back to the community by serving on the board of Epworth School for Girls and on the Board of Trustees for Central Methodist College. He sought to give others the opportunity of a college education by establishing the Unity Awards providing financial assistance to Fayette High School students to attend Central Methodist College and by establishing two Presidential Hall of Sponsors Scholarships at Central Methodist College. Bob leaves a treasured legacy to his brother, Glenn (Joan); to his son, Gary (Christy); his daughter, Dana (Bob); his grandchildren, Lindsay (fiancée, Dave Elin), Jamie and Jesse Raker, Cameron and David Willard, Christopher Siler, Jacob and Katie Wilson, Brandon Wilson, and Reid Wilson; great-grandchildren Kingston and Harlow Raker. The family would like to thank all who took such thoughtful, compassionate care of Bob through this very challenging final chapter of his life. Graveside memorial services will take place in St. Louis on Saturday, June 29th at 1:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery, 7800 St. Charles Rock Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Bob's honor may be made to Heifer International, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202.
