KOGO JACOB "BUTCH" 80, of Plantation, Florida, went to be with his Lord on September 2, 2013. He was born to immigrant parents in North Tonawanda, New York, on October 8, 1932. He joined the U.S. Army / Air Force, serving in Korea during the Korean Conflict. In 1963, he moved to Detroit, Michigan to work as a Welder for Ford Motor Co, and married Emma Louise Edin, also of North Tonawanda. They were married for 50 years. Jacob loved food, fishing, and fellowship with his friends, always ready with a story and a joke. He loved doing and making things with his hands, and serving his community. He was a Scout Master, and Detroit Police Reserve Officer, and a member of the Citizens Patrol. He was a member of Rio Vista Community Church, in Fort Lauderdale. He was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Anne Kogo, brother David, and sister, Elizabeth. Jacob is survived by family that will love and miss him greatly: his brothers, Donald and Daniel, sister Ann Marie Bitter, wife, Emma, their five children, and 16 grandchildren: Rhonda (Mark) Hart (Amanda, Devin), Mark (Ashley) Kogo (Charlotte, Benjamin); Christine (Jim) Potter (Michael, Emily); Matthew (Michelle) Kogo (Samantha, Sarah, and Abigail); and Vincent (Jen) Kogo (Aeneas, Timothy, Hannah, Josiah, Simeon, Samuel, and Hadassah). LANDSFIELD FRANK R. Age 90, passed away on August 10, 2013 at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingford Connecticut. Born August 13, 1922 in Harrison Michigan, Frank lived his youth in Detroit and raised a family in St. Clair. A graduate of Henry Ford Trade School as a pattern and model maker, Frank practiced the meticulous trade he loved for over 50 years. An Army veteran of WWII, he was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battles of Okinawa and Saipan. Frank is survived by his son, Robert F. Landsfield of Milford CT and his daughter, Gertrude E Lyons of Chicago IL and four grandchildren, Morgan Lyons, Hannah Lyons, Teigan Landsfield and McLean Landsfield. LEWIS CAROLYN ANN LANDER Passed away peacefully on Friday, September 6, 2013, with her family by her side, in Lansing, Michigan. Carolyn was a proud member of the first graduating class of Bishop Donahue High School. As an active alumnus and former member of the Board of Directors, Carolyn's commitment to the school's legacy was evident not only by her time spent organizing events, but also by her having established an academic scholarship for current B.D.H.S. students. Carolyn was a Certified Insurance Counselor and worked in the insurance industry her entire life until her retirement in 2011. She was very active in the church and had the pleasure of teaching religious education to hundreds of children in numerous dioceses throughout the Midwest. Carolyn was also an avid football fan who was always supportive of the Detroit Lions, University of Michigan and WVU. Carolyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charles (Chuck) Lewis; two children Scott Lewis and Sheryl Pilaczywski; and three grandchildren Samuel, Sophie and Maddie; two brothers, Alan Lander and John "Ted" Lander. McHALE DR. RAYMOND F. 84, of Plymouth, MI, died on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at home surrounded by family. Ray attended St. Mary's of Redford High School in Detroit, and earned degrees from The University of Detroit and Walden University. As a teenager, Ray served in the occupation forces in Japan immediately following World War II, then and later became an officer in the Air Force during the Korean conflict. In his 25 years as a teacher in the South Redford School District, he taught social studies to generations of Thurston High School students. Ray is survived by his wife of 52 years, Justine; his son, Burke Michael; his daugher-in-law Christy Veeder; his daughter, Ellen; son-in-law Michael Sierra; and grandchildren Isabel and Aidan. REILLY JAMES "JIM", 76, passed away at his home on Monday, August 26, 2013 in Redford, Michigan. He was born June 18, 1937 to Leo and Jean (McCloskey) Reilly in Detroit, Michigan. On January 5, 1957 he married the love of his life and very best friend, Eleanor Krest, and for the next 56 years they built together a life of love, caring, friendship and giving. Jim was an accomplished athlete and was a star pitcher for Detroit Central High School in the early 1950s. Following graduation, he began an extensive and successful career in the steel industry, before enjoying a well-deserved retirement in 2008. When not working, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, whether it be on the softball field, shooting a game or two of billiards, or at home simply watching TV (especially any movie that starred Jim's favorite actor, John Wayne -- "The Duke"). Above all else, Jim was a selfless and deeply generous man, who always placed the interests and wellbeing of his family and friends above his own. He also possessed a singular sense of humor, never failing to enliven any occasion with an abundance of laughter and smiles and goodwill. All those fortunate to have known Jim will miss him dearly, and he will never be forgotten. Rogers & Associates, P.C. in Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan; serving as a Community Planning Consultant to over 200 municipalities nationally. He also served as an Economic and Marketability Consultant to over 150 financial institutions and many land development businesses. He provided professional services to prepare applications on behalf of state and national banks, savings & loan associations and de novo financial institutions, also providing expert testimony in Courts of law and appearances before State Financial Institution Bureaus, the Comptroller of the Currency, and Federal Home Loan Boars in issues involving need & necessity, capital adequacy, acquisitions. Previous experience was serving as Senior City Planner for the City of Detroit, Executive Vice President for Parkins, Rogers & Associates, Inc. of Detroit, and as Planning Analyst for the Chicago Land Clearance Commission. Mr. Rogers graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard College where he received an AB Degree Cum Laude in Architectural Sciences. Thereafter, he graduated from the Harvard Graduation School of Design with a Master of City Planning degree. He is included in Marquis, Who's Who in America, was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Grosse Pointe (MI) Rotary Club. Mr. Rogers was an Adjunct Professor at Lawrence Technological University, College of Architecture and Design, and lectured at other universities. SARRIA JAMES E. Age 82 of Dearborn, died June 15, 2013. Beloved husband of the late Marian R. (Fishback) Sarria. He had several nieces and nephews to give advice to and to share his legacy. We will miss him dearly. James was born in Colombia, S.A., he came to the United States at a young age to attend college. He studied Electrical Engineering at Michigan Tech. and Wayne University in Michigan and graduated from the University of California in San Luis Obispo. He served at the US Navy and was a veteran of the Korean War. He obtained his U.S. citizenship in 1958 after leaving the Navy. Jim worked at NASA in Florida for several years before working with the Ford Motor Co. He was a dedicated employee at Ford and retired after 30 years of service. He had a great sense of humor, loved being around people and telling stories about his travels and experiences. SHARF STEPHAN A. Age 92. Beloved husband of Patti Finnegan Sharf. Predeceased by first wife, Rita, in 2001. Steve was a visionary business leader and entrepreneur who believed strongly in the power of philanthropy. He was a frequent contributor to Oakland University. He was dedicated to the success of the university and that dedication will benefit students, faculty, staff and our community for generations to come. Born in Berlin, Steve came to the United States in 1947. He made his mark in the automotive industry, first with the Ford Motor Company and then with Chrysler. He started out working on the plant floor and worked his way up to executive vice president. He retired in 1986 after 25 years with Chrysler. In retirement, Steve began a long and honorable tradition of giving back: to his former employees, to his community, to students and to Oakland University. He and his first wife, Rita, established the Stephan and Rita Sharf Scholarship in the School of Business Administration. He also established the Stephan Sharf Endowed Scholarship for Engineering Students. He made other significant gifts to Oakland University, including gifts to the Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, the School of Engineering and Computer Science, and a donation to establish the R & S Sharf Golf Course on the university's campus. Most recently, Steve provided funding to build the Sharf Clubhouse, which serves both of the university's golf courses and houses Patti Finnegan's Pub and Grille. Steve was well known in industry circles as a visionary leader and brought that wisdom and guidance to Oakland University in many ways: as a Trustee from 1987 to 1994, board vice chair from 1992-94 and member of the OU Foundation from 1985 to 2006. TOGNETTI NATALE E., 94, passed away Friday, September 6, 2013, at Gentiva Hospice in Southfield, MI, after a brief illness. Born in the copper country of Michigan, Natale came to Detroit in 1941 looking for work. Finally finding permanent employment at Vickers as a machinist, the family settled in Warren (formerly Van Dyke). After 20 years, when the company moved out of state, Natale stayed and found his true calling in sales. He had a long career and with his love of people and strong work ethic, excelled as a manufacturers rep in the automotive aftermarket. Loving mother of Lynn Curtis (Barbara), James Lee von Hatten and Mary Ann Carr. Grandmother of Kimberly (Steven) Marney, Erin Carr, and Steven (Jennifer) von Hatten. Great-grandmother of Katie and Phillip Marney and Lylah von Hatten. Predeceased by her husband, Lynn Stephen, and her sisters Josephine, Mildred, and Emelia. She graduated from Marygrove College and the University of Pittsburgh, with a BA in Mathematics and a Masters in Business Education, respectively. She taught in the Eastland Schools in Roseville, Michigan. Transferring to the Detroit Public Schools, she taught Business and Office Machines at Miller and Denby High Schools. She co-authored the first Business Machines textbook for the Detroit system in the 1950s and retired in 1974. In addition to tending to the needs of her immediate and extended family and hostessing parties, dinners, and celebrations for the past 70 years, she traveled in Canada, the United States, Mexico, and Europe. A Roman Catholic, dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Blessed Mother, she was a full participant first of St. Jude Parish in Detroit and then Holy Innocents-St. Barnabas Parish in Eastpointe. Her charitable works included: the Glen Mary Missions, the Smile Train, Paralyzed Veterans of America, the Society of St. Vincent DePaul, the National Shrine of St. Jude, the Christian Appalachian Project, the Children's Cancer Institute, and the Pentrickton Center for Blind Children. She was a patron of Detroit theaters and the Detroit Opera House and a supporting member of the Detroit Institute of Arts. WEAVER VIVIAN A., departed this life on Thursday, September 5, 2013, at the Hospice of Dayton. She was born May 16, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Troyit and Sarah Grier; was educated and graduated from Detroit Public Schools and then in 1945 was married to William S. Weaver and moved to Cleveland, Ohio where three (3) children were born: William, Stanley and Joyce. She worked as a nursing assistant at the Veterans Hospital and retired after 20 years service 1986. She was a devoted member of St. Mark's Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon, usher, and founding member and secretary of the St. Mark's Credit Union. She was also an active member of the Presbyterian Women, the Presbyterian Black Caucus, St. Mark's Benjamin H. Thompson Hunger Program and the Warrensville Heights Senior Center. After the 1993 sudden death of her husband she moved to Dayton, Ohio to live with her daughter where she attended Trinity Presbyterian Church and was an active participant of the Shiloh House adult Daycare Program. Vivian was also preceded in death by three (3) sibling: Dorothy Pearson, Rufus and Vernon Grier.
