BENTLEY WILLIAM "BUTCH" of Alameda, CA formerly of Detroit and Monroe, passed away on July 8, 2013 at the age of 72. Loving husband of Nora and father to his two daughters, Suzanne (George) Globke (and her mother, Patricia) of Willis, Michigan and Jennifer Small of Alameda, California. Proud grand-father of Seth and Jonah of Willis, MI and Nora, Aron, Julie and Uma of Alameda, CA. Family surviving include his cousins, Tom and Greg (Myra) Suski and Tim Colasinski and their children. Also survived by his sister, Josephine Malinowski and his brother Hank Balawajder. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Bill was born in 1940 in Detroit and graduated from St. Hedwig High School. He worked in industrial chemical sales in the Detroit area. He was the past president of Chemical Allied of Michigan. He was active at St. Christopher's parish, was Dad's Club president, an officer of the Elk's Club and a member of the Moose Lodge in Monroe. He moved to the California sunshine in 2011. He was easily found on the island by his electric scooter and his dog riding with him. CLARK CARLEAN MANNING 80, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, Mississippi. The memorial service will be at Holy Family Catholic Church, 820 Forest Avenue, Jackson, MS 39206. Fr. Ryszard Zawadzki, S.V.D., is Pastor. Dr. Carlean Clark was born January 1, 1933 in Jackson, MS to Pearl and Leola Manning. She attended Smith Robinson Elementary School and was a graduate of Lanier High School in 1951. After high school graduation, she continued her education at Tougaloo College. She began her career in education as a teacher at Magee High School in Magee, MS in 1955. The following year she taught at Weddington School in Greenville, MS in 1956 in additional to teaching at Lucy Webb School until 1964. In 1959, she joined Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greenville, MS. Carlean wed Mr. Charles P. Clark, II on October 31, 1959. To this union, two children were born, a son Charles P. Clark, II and daughter, Chlorinda Bernice Clark. The Clarks moved to Detroit, MI where they lived for many years. Carlean received her M.Ed. from Indiana State University in 1963 in Bloomingdale, Indiana. Carlean Clark received her Ph.D. from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI in 1978. She was employed by the Detroit Board of Education from 1964 until retirement in the late 1980's. Dr. Clark's lists of honors include membership in the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Other organizations include Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and a life member of the N.A.A.C.P. as well as the National Education Association (N.E.A.). Also, she is an ember of St. Annie's Court #71, Gracious Ladies Chapter 11 and former Grand Lake and Minister of Faith Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Detroit, MI. She was preceded in death by her parents, Pearl and Leola Manning, and sister Celia B. Ellison. Dr. Clark is survived by her husband Mr. Charles P. Clark, II; her children, Charles P. Clark, III (son) and Chlorinda Bernice Clark (daughter); Crystal Alexis Clark (daughter-in-law); George A. Manning (brother); Ola M. Howard (sister); and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

EASTERWOOD DOYNE. Former Ferndale Fire Chief passed on Saturday July 13, 2013 at the age of 83. He was born to Roy and Edith Easterwood on June 21st, 1930 in Ferndale, Michigan and was the brother to Roy, Basil, Jean and Marietta. Doyne married Ruth MacKay in 1951 and they had two daughters, Deborah and Sandra. He later married Joan Mitroff in 1987 where she remained his wife until his passing. Doyne was a graduate of Lincoln High School and began his 36 year career with the Ferndale Fire Department in 1952 at the age of 21, working his way to the rank of Chief in 1983. When Doyne retired he focused on his other passion, his 40' Pacemaker fishing boat, Black Jack. Doyne is survived by his wife Joanie, his daughter Sande, granddaughters Heather (Dave) and Carly and his three great- grandchildren Sommer, Kailey and Tyler. GANDEE SHERWIN, SR. "SONNY" age 84, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013 with his family at his side. He was a resident in the downriver community for over 50 years and had most recently been living in Gibraltar and Grosse Ile. Sonny was born in Akron, Ohio in 1929 to Sherman and Betty Gandee, along with twin, Sherman (Joe) Gandee Jr. He also had two sisters, GeGe and Joy. He attended Garfield High School in Akron and Ohio State University where he played his life's passion, football. In 1949 Sonny married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Grecni (deceased 2008). He was drafted into the NFL in 1952 and played with the Detroit Lions 1952-1958, retiring from the NFL in 1958. He was a member of three World Championship NFL teams 1952, 1953 and 1957. In 1966 he was inducted into the Summit County Sports Hall of Fame in Akron, Ohio. After retiring from the NFL he was owner of "Sonny Grandee's Celebrity House" in Wyandotte, now carrying the name of R.P. McMurphy's. He worked in the automotive industry until retirement at which time he moved to Florida until returning to Gibraltar in 2008. He was a long-time member at the Grosse Ile County Club where he enjoyed many days on the course and evenings at the Club mingling with friends and his family. He was also a long time member of the Elba-Mar Boat Club and used it as home base for his fishing expeditions which led to some of the biggest fishing stories of the Detroit River. Sonny Gandee was one of the exceptional people that you only meet once in a great while. He was truly a person of character, personality, integrity and led a life of example. He had many great accomplishments both personally and professionally but non greater than husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. A great man passed away on July 21, 2013 and he will forever be in our hearts and in our memories. Sonny is survived by his wife, Jo Burgett-Amo; son, Sonny Gandee Jr. (Catherine); his daughter, Gail Collier; and his sister, Genevieve Anderson. He is also survived by grandchildren: David Collier (Rachel), Sonny Gandee III (Stephanie), Kelly Collier, Cory Collier, Corey Chandler (LaKeisha); and great-grandchildren: Devon Collier, Corey Chandler II, Sonny Gandee IV and Emerson Gandee; step-children: Brian Orlandi and Cassandra Pallaghy. HANSON KENNETH G., of Boynton Beach, Florida (formerly of Birmingham, Michigan) passed away June 24, 2013. He was 80 years old and in poor health. Kenneth is survived by his daughter Cindy (Chris) Baertson of Madison Heights. His wife, Sandra, passed away December 18, 2012, also of poor health. She was 74. Their son Bruce died in 1999. Kenneth worked for GM in a white collar capacity from the 1950s until his retirement in the late 1980s. An avid golfer, he was a member of the Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills for many years. Ken and Sandy were also known for their love of antiques, subsequently opening an antique shop in Florida after they retired. JACOBS MICHAEL PAUL, 44, passed away on July 18, 2013 at his home in Waterford. He was born in Akron, Ohio, on February 22, 1969 to Paul and Jenifer Jacobs. Michael graduated from Farmington High and attended community college. He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corp, receiving a medical discharge, and was in the Disabled Veterans Program at the time of his passing. He was survived by his parents, Paul and Jan Jacobs; mother Jenifer Fegancher; brother Todd Jacobs; longtime companion Kelly Cox; step-sisters and their husbands, Lynn and Keith Hicks, Nan and Tim Dell, step-brother and his wife, Jeffrey and Nancy Pudlo; and many family members that include aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Michael was a man with a great great heart, loved the outdoors and the creatures of nature. He took great joy in being with all of his friends and family. Michael will be greatly missed by all of us. JIMENEZ ABRAHAM RIVERA "ABE" of Livonia, age 85, July 27, 2013, left this world peacefully and surrounded by family. Beloved husband for 57 years of Theresa Jimenez (Papler); loving father of Jennifer (Mike) Maloney, Cindy (Scott) Ashley, Kathy (Wayne) Bolton, and Tom Jimenez. Proud grandfather of Claire (Steve Straker), Brian, and Stephen Maloney; Colin (finacée Sara), Evan, and Dylan Bolton, Brandon and Tressa Ashley, and Tyler and Rachel Jimenez. Loving great-grandfather of Carly. Abe was born July 4, 1928 in Aguada, Puerto Rico to Dominga Jimenez and Hermenegildo Rivera. He was one of 14 children. He served honorably in the Army and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. After joining his brother Carmelo in the states and working in New York and Chicago, Abe settled in Detroit where he met Theresa and worked over 30 years for the Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company. He and Theresa loved their "little piece of paradise" home in Livonia, where Abe enjoyed his "therapy" - playing pinochle at the Senior Center, bowling on the Senior Merry Bowlers league, and getting out on the links at Idyl Wyld. With Theresa he also enjoyed their many travels, including visits to see their children and grandchildren and cruises with family and friends. In earlier years he was an accomplished pastry maker and in retirement perfected his cooking skills, especially with his sancocho. He will be greatly missed by his family, including his sister Tina, brothers Miguel (Aurora) and Mon (Lydia), numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his many friends. Among the many wonderful memories he leaves us are his gift for telling stories, love of Puerto Rico and its music, his singing and dancing, and always having a smile and finding a way to make us laugh. KENNEDY JOHN J. Age 90 July 26, 2013 John "Jack" of Dearborn Heights was a great man from the Greatest generation. He was a proud WWII Veteran of the US Army Air Force, Tech Sergeant with five stripes and several medals, including the Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, three Overseas Service Bars, Good Conduct Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge, 444th Bombardment Group, 677th Squadron of the 20th Air Force. He served in India, China and on the Islands of Tinian and Saipan. John retired from Michigan Consolidated Gas Company and Jack Roberts Pool Company. He was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Healy) Kennedy. John was a man of great dignity. He was the loving father of Noreen Kennedy (Traverse City, MI), John M. Kennedy, and Colleen (James) Giovanni. John was the proud grandfather of Sean Giovanni (Nashville, TN) and Meagan Giovanni. He was a treasured brother and brother-in-law, beloved uncle of many nieces and nephews and a respected and kind friend to many. A devoted wife and mother, Phyllis was a Cub Scout Den Mother, school lunch provider and always present for her children, a role she adored. Phyllis enjoyed working the crossword puzzle and spending time with family and friends. KOVACH ROBERT P. 85, son of Louis and Lora (Davis) Kovach passed away July 22, 2013. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marilyn Dougherty Kovach, on November 14, 2012. He is survived by three children, Paul M. Kovach (Sue), Karl J. Kovach (Patty), both of Indianapolis, Indiana, Ann Marie Kovach of Livonia, Michigan and four grandsons.
