After all of her four children were in school she returned to college, earning a Master of Education from U. of M. in 1962 (named the William H. Payne Scholar for the top master's degree student) and a Ph.D. in psychology from Wayne State University in 1966. Prior to motherhood, Maggie worked in several Civil Service jobs as an Institution Psychologist. After completing her education and when her child-rearing responsibilities were less challenging, she organized and led a group of psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists known as the Wake Psychology Clinic (1966-1983) in Royal Oak next door to her husband's pediatric clinic. Besides administrating the Clinic, she did psychotherapy, diagnostic examinations of patients and recommended decisions about child custody cases to the Oakland County judges. Margaret was multi-talented, a real renaissance woman. She studied piano, violin, guitar, and harmonica as a child. Her senior year in high school she was the concert mistress for the school orchestra. Later in life, she learned to play the accordion, organ and keyboard. In childhood, she made marionettes and put on productions for local children. She was active in Girl Scouting, achieving the rank of Golden Eaglet. She, with her mother's encouragement, developed an interest in doing recitations and acting. This culminated in the lead role in the Spanish play her senior year in college. She began playing tennis in high school and played until, in her early eighties, she developed macular degeneration and could no longer see the ball. She was on the ice hockey team in high school. She also enjoyed roller skating, bowled in a league in Royal Oak for decades and was an Alpine skier. As an adult she took up her husband's avocation of sailboat racing and was very accomplished at that, becoming the first woman to sail 25 Port Huron-Mackinac Races (achieving the elevated status of "Old Nanny Goat"). She was a volunteer psychologist for the Royal Oak Public Schools (1949-1962) and was an elected member of the Royal Oak School Board for ten years, serving a term as president. Maggie married Douglas L. Wake on August 18, 1940. He survives her, as do their four children, Brian (Joan), Patricia (James) Townsend, Mary Ann (George) Uznis and Lewis (Marie). She also leaves nine grandchildren, one step-grandchild and fifteen great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her younger brother, Fred, Jr. (Dr. Fred Bryant). Dr. Wake lived a long and productive life. She passed away, of complications from a fall, on January 26, 2012, at age 93. She will be buried in the family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery in Eagle Harbor, MI. There will be a memorial party at Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit, the date to be determined. Memorial contributions may be made to Calumet High School for the Dr. Margaret B. Wake Memorial Scholarship or to the Bayview Yacht Club Junior Sailing program, in care of Patti Townsend, 4944 Bluff Road, Whitehall, MI 49461.
