SHEPPARD LORRAINE M., age 88, who resided at Sunrise of North Ann Arbor, died Friday, July 29th, 2011. Born on September 3rd, in Detroit, Michigan to William F. and Luella M. (Gustafson) Dalzen. Lorraine graduated with honors from Grosse Pointe High school, and the Detroit Institute of Musical Art in 1939 at the age of 16. She completed her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Michigan in 1943 when she was only 20 years old. Her father was required to sign for her first job as a Teacher in the Bad Axe school district as she was not of legal age at the time. Her teaching career spanned more than 30 years in the Bad Axe, Mt. Pleasant, Big Rapids, and South Lake School Districts. She pursued and attained a Master's Degree in Education, from Wayne State University, while maintaining her busy teacher's schedule that included but was not limited to Classroom Teacher, Debate Coach, and Dramatic Arts Teacher/Sponsor. She was very proud that many of her students held her in such "high regard", kept in contact, and visited with her when schedules allowed. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa sorority for more than 50 years and served as its State President from 1970-1972. She met her Husband, Maurice (Morrie) Sheppard, while teaching in Mt. Pleasant. They were married in June, 1952, and remained life partners until Morrie's death in early 1999. Lorraine traveled to all this world's continents beginning in 1947 with a trip to South America with her sister, Luella. Lorraine and Morrie took their first trip to Europe in 1955. Lorraine was able to continue her world travels well in to later life. She combined her love of travel, the "arts", and continuous learning throughout her life, and delighted with any opportunity to share this love with family and friends. Lorraine and Morrie enjoyed a peaceful retirement on Crooked Lake in Chelsea, Michigan beginning in 1977. Until this time, they had stayed at their "dream house" only during school vacation breaks and the summer. Lorraine loved living at the lake, relished the daily walks with her special friend, Sophie, and relaxed during pontoon rides in the morning and evening. Lorraine and Morrie enjoyed year-round living on the lake for several years before they began wintering in Pinellas Park, Florida. Lorraine enjoyed her volunteer work at the local library during their winter stay. The lake house in Chelsea was sold in 1995 and Lorraine and Morrie moved to their condo in Ann Arbor. Lorraine volunteered and received special recognition from the University of Michigan Health System for more than ten years of volunteer service. She also volunteered through the UMHS Social Work Office at the "jewelry sales" that benefitted programs for the Turner Geriatric Center. After Morrie died, Lorraine found comfort with a group of women whose hearts were also heavy with grief. She remained a member of this group for the rest of her life. She maintained an active membership with "The Cube" and faithfully drove herself to thrice weekly workouts until her health began to change. We always marveled at how devoted she was to staying active, healthy, and involved with others. She was forever a loyal Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines fan who always watched or listened to their games. She was a stranger only once, and then, a friend forever. Not one to embrace electronic communications, she loved to write and read a good letter. Lorraine was never at a loss for words and could carry on a stimulating conversation with anybody about anything. Lorraine is survived by her sister, Luella (Dalzen) Thompson, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Luella Dalzen, sister Elaine Dalzen, and brothers Russell Dalzen, Frederick Dalzen, and Ronald Dalzen. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice. Cremation has taken place according to Lorraine's wishes. Memorial service to be held on September 24th, 11:30 a.m. at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest, 1275 S.
