WRIGHT JOHN MARTIN mourned by family and friends -- Born March 23, 1952 in Detroit, died here October 5, 2011 from complications during multiple organ transplant surgery, after a long and valiant fight. John was a proud Michigander, and it is somehow fitting that his life began and ended in the city he so loved. But the years in between were filled with great and wonderful adventures. John was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, posted to Berlin, where he managed a military theater, and explored his theatrical talents. After leaving the service, John moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in Entertainment. He successfully founded and ran the Matrix Theater in Hollywood for five years. Then he co-founded Lexington Scenery and Props, which soon became the largest independent designer and builder of thematic construction for the entertainment industry in the United States. John took great pride in the company he built and grew. Fueled by Lexington's success, John became a founding member, and ultimately served as President, of the Themed Entertainment Association, and was deeply respected and loved by all of the members of this vast network of entertainment professionals. But nothing in his career could match the success of the relationship he built with the love of his life. John and his beloved Molly Miles shared 25 beautiful years All who knew them marveled at the romance between the two striking redheads, and how their love story endured through all their years together. They were devoted to each other, warm and generous to others, throwing their doors open to share their home, located beneath the second "L" in the Hollywood sign. Gracious hosts, they were renowned for throwing fun parties, and beautiful holiday gatherings where all were welcome. John was an artist in all things he pursued. Whether it was building a stage set, or playing a musical instrument, supporting a struggling artist, discovering a new play, or enjoying a cutting edge restaurant, John was a Renaissance man with eclectic tastes, who always had his finger on the pulse of the avant garde. He enjoyed all musical forms, and had a vast collection of classic guitars and other instruments. He loved sharing this passion, and often opened up his music room to amateur jam sessions with anyone willing to give it a try. As with everything, John embraced and welcomed friends and strangers alike. If someone needed a helping hand, John would offer his...or find someone who could. John's many friends remember him as a gentle man with a true lust for life. Generous and caring, John Wright was never heard to say an unkind word about anyone. He was curious by nature, and found great joy in exploration and learning. John would research all matter of subjects in avid detail and delight in sharing his newfound knowledge. John was an affable man, easy to talk to, and an even better listener. He loved to experience new things and take chances. He also believed in giving back. Which is how John and Molly came to leave California in 2010, to move back to his hometown, so that John could work on the Downtown Detroit Redevelopment Project. It's perfect symmetry that John's last efforts were to help rebuild the city he loved. John's big laugh and love of life, were ever present, even when the odds were against him. John Wright remained upbeat and positive, through his devastating illness, which he faced with courage, and hope, and his beloved Molly at his side. John Wright is survived by his wife, Molly Miles, his sister Nora Wright, his beloved nephews and niece, and many, many friends and admirers. Donations may be made to the Boll Family YMCA, 1401 Broadway, Detroit, MI 48226 or www.ymcadetroit.org in his honor. A celebration of the life of John Wright will be held on October 23, 2011 at 12:30PM at Kensington Court, 610 Hilton Blvd, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. 734-761-7800.
