BYLAND LILA Age 101, passed away Monday, October 22nd, peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Beloved wife of the late Donald for 62 years. She was especially proud of her six great-grandchildren Sophia Gilardone, Ben and Erin Lytle, Jacqueline and Charlie Meade, and Madeline Endlein. CLARKE JOAN Died on October 17th from a virulent strain of throat and brain cancer. She was born in 1933 and lived in Detroit until moving with her husband, Patrick to Grosse Pointe Farms in early 1969. Joan graduated from Michigan State College in 1955. She then worked as a lunchroom manager in the Detroit Public School system, until joining the Detroit Police Department in 1957. As a police woman, Joan was awarded a departmental citation and Police Woman of the Year in 1962 for undercover investigation of an illegal abortion ring. She entered the Detroit College of Law in 1963, graduating in 1967. Passing the bar exam that summer, she was hired by the Wayne County Prosecutor in 1968 as a trial prosecutor, remaining in this position until her retirement in 1996. Joan was one of the first female attorneys in this position. In retirement, she and Patrick enjoyed one another's company, and traveled extensively from Svalbard, Norway to Hawaii. She was an avid bridge player and bowler, as well as an alumna member of the Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Discussing politics critically and studying Detroit's current issues gave her much pleasure. Predeceased by her twin sister, Jean, Joan is survived by her husband of 45 years; her younger sister, Ursula McMahon of Grosse Pointe Farms; numerous nephews and nieces as well as grand-nephews and grand-nieces. A remembrance gathering in celebration of Joan's life shall be held at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Center's Ballroom on November 1, 2012 from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. at 32 Lakeshore (Jefferson Ave.), Grosse Pointe Farms, MI. Employed as an occupational nurse in the Detroit metro area and then as a substance abuse counselor in Harrison Township. Carolyn was a fun loving, compassionate and giving person to all. She will be dearly missed and not forgotten.
