LeBLANC ARTHUR "ART" 84, of Palm Desert, CA, died October 5, 2010 of congestive heart failure at the Odyssey House in Palm Desert. Art was born April 20, 1926 to Leo and Eleanor LeBlanc in Detroit. He attended Fordson High School in Dearborn, and enlisted in the Navy in January, six months before he graduated in 1944. Art helped launch and was on the trial shakedown of the USS Yellowstone, a destroyer tender he would serve on until his discharge in 1947. Art had a life-long fascination and respect for law enforcement, where he worked for most of his adult life. After a brief stint as a businessman, he began his career as a patrolman in Dearborn. He and his family moved in 1959 and he became an officer in Covina, CA. He progressed through the ranks before taking over in 1969 as Chief of Police in Coronado, CA, where he served until the end of 1980. In 1981 he took over as San Diego Harbor Police Chief where his duties included all police activities at the airport and five cities along the waterfront to the Mexican border. He served until his retirement in 1991. Art was extremely proud and pleased when the FBI accepted him for their training at the 88th Class of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA. He stayed in contact with many of his new friends who attended the program with him, and thoroughly enjoyed going to all the luncheons and dinners. Arthur married Vivian Mitchell in 1946. She died in 1960. He married Virginia Higgins in 1964. Virginia, two daughters and a brother predeceased him. A sister, Mary Ellen of Northville, two brothers, Henry, of Taylor, Richard of Palm Desert, CA, a granddaughter, Donna Romano, and her son Jacob of Eugene, OR survive him. A Rosary and Funeral Mass beginning at 11:30 a.m. on January 4, 2011 will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Palm Desert, CA. Interment Riverside National Cemetery.
