POSHADLO CLIFFORD (CLEOPHAS), SR. Age 93. "The Miracle Baby" (as he was called) turned blue and nearly died of the once deadly diphtheria which no one thought he would survive; leaving a vocal cord paralyzed, a swallow muscle dysfunctional, insistent expectoration, hearing loss, and slight mental impairment. He wanted to become a priest, but his grades weren't high enough. Being the neighborhood hero, who took care of bullies on the block, girlfriends flocked "to visit" his kid sister just to catch a glimpse of her noble, handsome and charming big brother. Enlisting voluntarily right after Pearl Harbor, he valiantly intended to take care of the global bullies menacing the world. Gallantly offering to take back the engagement ring he just gave his one-and-only sweetheart, who refused (saying she'd wait until he got back), he earnestly sought combat duty as Staff Sergeant in the Army Air Corps during the Battle of Britain as tail gunner, waist gunner, turret gunner, nose gunner, belly gunner, and bombardier-all requests being denied. The love of his life "pulling rank" on him, by not going to see President Roosevelt or General Eisenhower, but by going to see the Holy man of Mount Elliott, Fr. Solanus Casey, telling him "my fiancé wants to fight the enemy so bad, he's gonna get himself killed;" to which he replied "don't worry, he'll be just fine." Despite all of his physical handicaps, he learned to play many instruments, even managing to earn a seat in a symphony orchestra playing the violin. Forgiving a substantial loan he had given a long-time buddy when he finally paid it back many years later (after the man's conscience had gotten to him), he proved himself to be "a friend in need, is a friend indeed." Honorably refusing to sue the company upon retirement for black lung disease from working at the infamous foundry at the Ford Rouge Plant, even though he was assured his claim would not be contested, he only expressed gratitude for having a job that allowed him to raise his family where his wife could stay at home to raise their three sons in comfort. Gaining a strong faith in God at a very impressionable age by seeing him on his knees, hands piously folded, praying out loud in the bedroom when he didn't think anyone was around. Seeing him go cold turkey when mom threatened to leave him, even though he was a good man and she loved him, giving him the choice between her and the bottle. He permanently sobered up when she made good on her promise. THIS is the man, a real man's man who I'm privileged and proud to call my father; the senior half of "the Cliffs." I said it as a young boy; then again as a young man; and, now, as a senior citizen: "Dad, you're the greatest man I ever met; you're the greatest man I ever knew!" Appropriately named after the disciple who unknowingly walked with the risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus that Easter afternoon, while discussing what his wife (one of the Marys) witnessed on seeing the unguarded and empty tomb that Easter morning to anoint the body.
