ABELLA-WHEELER BETH I., MD. FAAP July 17th 1961- April 24th 2013. Beth earned her Angel wings in Newbury Park on April 24th when she joined her Lord and Savior, after keeping cancer at bay for 16 months. Beth was born in New Jersey and was the daughter of Joan Wheeler and the late John Wheeler. Beth married her college sweetheart and husband of 33 years and was such a loving wife that they came to be known as one, "Beth and Steve". Beth was one of the few who could balance a career and family, excelling at everything she attempted as is witnessed by her legacy. She adopted and mentored three children during medical school, whom under her tutelage rose from poverty to become successful men with beautiful families of their own (Manuel, Andres and the late Antonio) now in their early forties. Beth was a loving and devoted mother; her maternal instincts and success were lavishly given to her four daughters whom she had through her medical school (Isabel), pediatric residency (Alicia) / fellowship (Carmen) and starting a new practice (Maggie). She was tireless in mothering and mentoring children of her own and had so many "adopted" or borrowed children that her house was the center of a bubbling hangout, frequently with 6-7 of her children around the dinning room table all drawn by her quick smile and loving warmth. Beth resided and practiced pediatric medicine in metro Detroit, Michigan and Phoenix, Arizona. Beth was acknowledged as a gifted physician and was repeatedly recognized as one of America's Top Pediatricians, held in high esteem by both her peers and patients. A friend wrote of Beth, " In the Book of Syrah it speaks of God's calling to be a physician, I believe Beth was God's best work." Beth moved to California in May 2011 when she joined Amgen. Beth was preceded in death by her father John Wheeler and is survived by her husband Steve, her four daughters Isabel, Alicia, Carmen and Margarita, son in law Bryan, grandson Bryan Jr, mother Joan, brother John, and Sister Gwen as well as precious nieces and nephews. Though Beth's years were shorter than anyone would have chosen, her life was great in both breath and depth as she enjoyed and excelled in classical dance, mastered multiple music instruments, was the ultimate travel soccer mom, experienced motorcyclist, and team doctor, who loved travel and vacations at the shore and most of all spending time with her family and friends. Visitation Monday April 29th between 5 and 7p.m. (prayer service at 6p.m.) at Griffin Family Funeral Home, 101 E Wilbur Rd., Thousand Oaks CA 91360. Funeral Mass is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30th at 11 a.m. at St Julie's in Newbury, 2475 Borchard Rd., Newbury Park, CA 91320 (805) 498-3602-- followed by reception.
