WATERSTONE MARY MANDANA (PETEY) Retired Wayne County Circuit Court Judge, beloved wife, mother, aunt, and sister, died on April 21, 2014 of cancer. Mary was born November 19, 1939 in St. Joseph, Michigan but lived most of her life in Detroit, a city she loved with a passion beyond compare. She leaves behind a huge, grieving community of family, friends, and neighbors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alan Waterstone, but is survived by their children, Jeff, Pam, and Lisa. Also preceding her in death were her two sisters, Cindy and Susan, but is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Sally Long. She also leaves behind her beloved niece, Sarah, and Jennifer, Tracy, and nephews John, Matthew, and all of their children and grandchildren. Mary was a pioneering woman lawyer for Michigan Bell and while initially appointed as Judge, subsequently was successfully re-elected twice. At the end of her long career, she encountered adversity which she met with courage and fortitude. She was a tower of strength to her family and friends and overcame much in her life. She was honest, hard working and she always loved the underdog especially when it came to rescuing animals. She was an accomplished athlete, running marathons and climbing mountains (including Mt. Everest) all the way through 2013. But most of all, Mary brought people together in her career, in her family, and in her community. She touched people's lives in profound ways and her sudden illness and passing is a loss too great to fully communicate. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 1 at the Jefferson Avenue Presbyterian Church, 8625 East Jefferson Avenue (between Burns and Jefferson). Memorial donations may be made to the Alan R. Waterstone Memorial Endowed Scholarship at Wayne State University which Mary established in 1996 or the animal charity of your choice.
