NEWNAN EDNA S. Age 79, born in Detroit, MI on February 17, 1931 Departed on January 7, 2011 and resided in Birmingham, MI. O how we loved her. How much we already miss her. Edna had far reaching influence, by way of her: concerns for the planet earth; love of truth; gift of compassion and sharing; respect for persons of good will, regardless of their religious views; honesty; and abiding faith in all she believed to be eternal. A gifted person--a woman of deep faith--a warm heart and a generous spirit! Edna Newnan was a Renaissance woman: a naturalist, artist, woman of letters and philanthropist. With her former husband Henry L. Newnan Jr., loving mother of: Owen S. Newnan, Frances B. Wesson and Henry Loring Newnan III, all of whom survive her; grandmother of Henry, Jennifer, Gabriel, Leah, Rebekah and Alex (and spouses); great grandmother of seven+. Edna earned degrees from: Liggett Academy, graduating in 1948; Oakland University Bachelor of Arts in English, Summa Cum Laude, in 1967; and University of Michigan Master of Arts in Asian studies in 1974. She also was a ministerial studies student at Marygrove College. As a naturalist Edna studied under Walter Nichols of the Cranbrook Institute of Science. She crusaded for the preservation of nature with the Michigan Nature Association; of which she was a member and vital force, serving as president, director, and then with the design and supervision of the book that she co-authored and edited, In Retrospect, published in 1988. Edna participated in, or contributed to, many other organizations and charities in her lifetime, among them PBS, the Sierra Club, the Methodist Church (joined January, 1985), Stephen Ministry (protégé of Dr. William K. Quick), Junior League of Birmingham, Village Women's Club, Tau Beta, and tutoring Japanese women. She also enjoyed yoga, the Christ Church Cranbrook Book Club, world travel, pets, bird watching and dog breeding. Edna will forever be remembered for her: authenticity, loyalty and seeking for truth, and her lack of concern for petty ideas and self-serving issues. She cared for: movements of society, which helped, or hindered human progress; the health and welfare of those within her personal sphere of influence; and was well known for offering up her time-and-energy, best efforts, gifts and service. In accordance with Edna's wishes, no public ceremonies in her honor are planned; though on January 15 family will receive local friends in Amarillo, TX, followed by a celebration in Warren, MI on February 11. Her cremated remains will be inurned at White Chapel Cemetery, 621 W. Long Lake Rd., Troy with viewing 1-4:20 p.m. daily, Room 314, 2nd Floor on the right. Memorial tributes may be made to Michigan Nature Association or local Sierra Club (SEMG). A. J. Desmond & Sons, 248-362-2500. View obituary and share memories at www.DesmondFuneralHome.com
