SMILLIE CAPT. CHARLES M., III., passed away November 14, 2013. Mr. Smillie attended University Liggett School, a private PreK-12 day school located in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. He then continued his education at Cornell University at age 16. He received a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), completed a Master's degree in Marketing from Michigan State University and also got a Master's degree in Business from Wayne State University. After undergrad, Mr. Smillie was inducted in the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, was promoted to Captain, then was honorably discharged in 2004. In 1977, upon the death of his father, Mr. Smillie became the steward of the family business, C.M. Smillie & Co. which was founded in Detroit, Michigan in Lafayette St in 1889. The company was founded as a tool and die shop but branched out to become a major supplier to the automotive, aerospace and industrial marketplace. During his tenure, Mr. Smillie wrote 12 patents ranging from tooling designs to the first prototype of the modern trash compactor. One of Mr. Smillie's greatest accomplishments was defeating the Michigan Strike Breakers Law (MCL 423.253 MSA 17.456) in court against the UAW United Auto Workers v. C.M. Smillie & Co., Docket No. 67895). By defeating the Strike Breakers Law, he set free businesses to hire people while union workers striked, a labor tactic that had given overwhelming power to workers since the 1800s. Like David and Goliath, he single-handedly brought balance to labor relations by redefining the power structure between unions and companies in the U.S. He is survived by his wife Cynthia Smillie, sons Greg Smillie, Bradford Smillie and Scott Smillie, daughter in law Gabriella Smillie, grandchildren Christopher Smillie, Nicholas Smillie, Connor Smillie and Samantha Smillie. He was preceded in death by his father Charles M. Smillie II, mother Helen V. Smillie, sister Virginia Wilson and ex-wife Betty J. Smillie. KETOLA, MARIE Of Rogers City, formally of Gwinn and Brighton. Her family announces with great sadness, her unexpected death on November 15, 2013 from a heart attack. She peacefully went to The Lord surrounded by family. Marie came into the world January 30,1934 in Hamburg, Michigan to proud parents James and Lyla (Rickett) Ryan. Preceded in death by her husband Reino Ketola and brothers Joseph and Emmet Ryan. The third of eight children, she is survived by Regina (Robert) Brown, James (Beverly) Ryan, Susan Craig, Patricia Buckingham, and Dennis Ryan. She lovingly raised five children Daniel (Jeanie) Cox of Grand Ledge, Ronald Cox of Brighton, John (Debbie) Cox of Garland, Texas, Karen Harju of Toledo, Ohio, and Michelle (Dana) LaBar of Rogers City. Marie was blessed with 11 grandchildren to love and spoil. A genuine good old fashioned mother and grandmother who dispensed her love of God and the good things in life to all she met, especially her grandchildren. She loved to hold hands, "I am always with you, you have held my Hand" Psalms 73:23 was a fact of life with Marie. Both figuratively and Spiritually with her faith in God. With a twinkle in her eye and a ready smile for all, Marie never met a stranger. She was proud to be Irish and had the ready laughter that went with her curiosity of all things good in life. Birds and chippies will mourn her as well as they held a special place in her heart, marauding raccoons on the other hand did not. They received a stern look and a poke with her cane. Marie always whole heartily endorsed and supported whatever it was you were interested in. She was invited to join the Red Hat Society by a few women whose company she enjoyed. When she found out there were two different groups she did not want to hurt the feelings of anyone and did not accept either offer, although we found she had a red dress and hat in beautiful boxes displayed in her room. She will be missed by many true friends and loving family here on earth but will rejoice with many more in Heaven. Godspeed and thank you for being such a good and loving mother, grandmother, and friend; you will be dearly missed.
