QUAY ROBERTA (BOBBIE) Beloved mother and grandmother passed into the arms of God on Tuesday, December 4, 2012 after a short illness, surrounded by the love of her family. Born January 29, 1927 in Marion, Ohio, Bobbie was the second child of Max and Olive (Shipley) Yarrington. Her childhood was spent in Ohio and Michigan as her father, a building contractor, supported Bobbie and her brother, Don. Bobbie's mother Olive died when Bobbie was 3 years old. Bobbie's step-mother, Mae (Dunlap) Yarrington, died when Bobbie was 16 years old, leaving behind Bobbie's younger sister, Susan. Despite a childhood filled with loss, Bobbie was irrepressibly optimistic, finding the good in life, tackling challenges, learning from them, and always teaching others, including in the final days of her life as she chose a peaceful death, at home with her family and secure in her deep and abiding faith in God. She was a graduate of Midland High School (1945), Russell Sage College (B.A. 1949), and Eastern Michigan University (M.Ed. 1962). Bobbie married LaGene M. Quay in Gaylord December 27, 1949, and they celebrated 48 years of marriage prior to Gene's death in 1997. She was a dedicated and passionate elementary school teacher for over 30 years and told great stories of classroom days and as she said, all that her students taught her. She was loved by her students. In 1967, when Bobbie was 40, she earned her private pilot's license. She and Gene flew thousands of miles in their Cessna 172 over the next 25 years and as recently as October entertained a dinner table of fellow pilots with stories of her flying adventures. After Gene's death, Bobbie enjoyed many trips with Elder Hostel including Alaska, the Maritime Provinces, Grand Manan Island, England, and two trips to the land of her heritage, Scotland. Each trip resulted in a wonderful scrapbook of pictures and memories and, of course, educational tidbits. Bobbie is survived by her loving family: her son Steven and his wife Shu-Chih Chen and their children Tara and Natasha, her daughter Nancy and life partner Sherry Marcy and their children Ben and Jesha, as well as many family and friends near and far. As a person who had lost so much, her life was one of giving to others. Bobbie cherished her relationships and stayed in touch faithfully with those she loved. She hosted a weekly Bible study group in her home for many years. Bobbie was a wonderful cook, an amazing and talented gardener, a perpetual watcher of nature, and an avid reader. Please remember her during a meal with your family, a walk in a garden, the sight of a chickadee on a branch, or in the midst of a great book. Godspeed, Mom and Grandma; you'll live on in our hearts forever. Services will be held at the Rockford United Methodist Church on Saturday, December 15th at 3:00 p.m. 159 Maple Street, Rockford, Michigan. Interment will be at a later date at Bethlehem Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan. www.muehligannarbor.com
