SPENCE LINDA JAN Age 66, passed away at her home in East Lansing, Michigan. Born July 10, 1947 in Detroit, Michigan to Jesse Duncan Smart Smith and James Latta Spence and grew up in Birmingham. In 1969, Linda completed her undergraduate degree in the School of Nursing, Michigan State University. In 1970 she attended the University of California, San Francisco for specialty training in Family-Child Nursing. She then continued her education at Michigan State University, obtaining a Ph.D. in 1992 in Developmental and Child Family/Clinical Psychology. Dr. Spence was a long time member of the College of Nursing faculty with expertise in Family-Child Nursing, Human Development and Clinical Psychology. She taught pediatrics and a variety of other courses in the undergraduate program as well as courses in the Masters and Ph.D. programs. During her forty year tenure, she shared her expertise with generations of undergraduate and graduate nursing students and contributed significantly to the development of curriculum and learning experiences. Over time, her interest in the care of children merged with her avocation for training dogs. Her clinical work and research focused on the adaptation of chronically ill children and their families as well as the role of companion animals in the adaptation process. Dr. Spence served on the committee that developed the initial Master's degree program as well as the committee that developed the Ph.D. Program. She was also a long time member of the Institutional Review Board for the Protection of Human Subjects. Dr. Spence retired from MSU in 2011 to focus on her love of dogs. Linda is survived by cousins, Joan Smith of East Lansing and Cheryl Shewach of West Bloomfield and many others, as well. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Memorial Gathering will be held Saturday, September 21 from 4-7 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 1730 E. THOMAS ROSE M. October 5, 1918, to August 25, 2013 Birmingham, MI. Rose Marie Thomas died on August 25, 2013, after a brief illness from complications from a fall at a restaurant. She would have been 95 in October. In 1990, she was predeceased by her husband of fifty-one years, Vincent T. Thomas. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1918, Rose was the oldest of eight children born to her mother, Elizabeth. She attended Hamtramck High School. During World War II, she worked at the Willow Run Bomber Plant, riveting fuselages—she was literally a "Rosie the Riveter." She and Vince were married in 1941 and, when Vince enlisted in the Army Air Corp, she followed him, with baby Doug in tow, to Air Force bases in Texas, Arizona, and California. After the war, she was a homemaker, but in her "spare time" became an ambitious gardener, baked, bowled, made jewelry, made copperware, read extensively, and competed in rose growing competitions, decoupage, miniatures, and ceramics winning boxes of awards and trophies. She owned a ceramic supply business with Vince, called Rovin Ceramics and was a professional florist for many years. Christmas was her favorite holiday and her carefully adorned Christmas trees are legendary. After Vince passed away in 1990, her grandchildren, Annie and Sarah, were the love of her life. Rose is survived by her sons, Doug and Marc; daughter-in-law, Deb (Marc); and granddaughters Annie and Sarah. She is also survived by her brother Paul (Pat) and their children, Paul Jr. and Dawn, as well as her other nieces and nephews, Ernestine (Dave), Greg, Jerry, Lori, Carl, Jr., Dale, Cindy, Cheryl, and Jay, on one side of the family; and Helene (Alexander), Barb (Ed), Anthony (Cecilia), Michael (Nancy), Mary (Earl), Tom (Helen), Katherine (Kevin), Sue (Dan), Joann, Rosemary, Leona (Ray), and Genevieve, on the other side. WILKINS ROBERT E. Of Warren, MI, passed away on August 14, 2013 at the age of 91 from natural causes, just days after surgery to reinforce a broken hip. He was born in Detroit, graduated from Cooley High, served in the U.S. Air Force (WWII) and as a reserve officer 1951-52. In Junior High he learned to play the trumpet and this talent carried him throughout his life. He was a member of four community bands - Farmington and Frankentrost in Michigan and Comal and New Braunfels Brass in Texas. Bob enjoyed swimming and as soon as the water temperature was close to 72 degrees, he was doing laps. He was playing his trumpet and swimming into his mid-80s. Bob attended University of Detroit and Wayne State University, earning a teaching credential. For 23 years he taught Math and Science at East Junior High in Farmington. After retirement he and wife Winnie moved to the San Antonio, Texas area to spend their winters. They enjoyed the years spent there and traveling to distant lands every chance they could. He is survived by his children, Colleen (Bob Fey) and Ward (Kathy); grandchildren Nicole and Erica Wilkins; sister Gerry Bessler; and two nieces, three nephews; and four grandnieces and three grandnephews. His dry sense of humor, music on the stereo, and tinkering in the garage will be missed. A gravesite service is planned for November 29th at Oakview Cemetery in Royal Oak at 3 p.m.

GANIARD JAMES HAYES, 60, died peacefully on August 19 at Life Path Hospice in Tampa, Florida. He is survived by his children, Elizabeth Ganiard and James H. Ganiard, Jr. (J.J.) of East Grand Rapids, MI; his mother, Patsy O'Neill Ganiard of Bloomfield Hills, MI; his brothers Roderick F. Ganiard, Jr. (Karen) of Green Bay, WI and Thomas Ganiard of Bloomfield Hills, MI; his sister Nancy Smith (Kevin) of Pacific Palisades, CA, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins. His father, Roderick Findlay Ganiard, predeceased him. Born and raised in Michigan, Jamie had an abiding love for his home state, where he spent a good part of his life trolling and casting for fish in its lakes and rivers. University of Michigan football was another passion. He'll be remembered for his big heart, charismatic personality and unmatched ability to make others laugh. He felt intense loyalty and affection for his family and friends, all of whom adored him.
