PFEIFLE THOMAS F., SR. Age 78, passed away with his family due to heart disease on October 9th, 2012 at Select Specialty Hospital, in Wilmington, DE. Tom was born July 18th, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan to John and Virginia Pfeifle. Tom graduated from Grosse Pointe High School and went to the University of Wisconsin on a football scholarship until suffering a knee injury in his sophomore year. He transferred to Western Michigan University where he graduated with a degree in Business Administration and where he met the love of his life, and future wife, Sonja Sue Axtell. Tom started his career at the Ford Motor company where he was Account Manager in its parts services business. He later joined the Maritz Company where he earned several accolades including being the company's top performing Area Sales Manager for over 30 years. His line of work ensured he traveled the world and his favorite destination was Paris, France where he developed a connoisseur's palate and lifelong passion for fine red wine. In his spare time he also owned the Bay Window Restaurant and Theatre in Caseville, MI. Tom's most important role in life was being a dad. Having grown up without a father he ensured that he was a provider, mentor, and ultimately a best friend to his children. His love of family and life extended to all who knew him. Tom is survived by his sons, John and Daniel and their wives, Teresa and Elizabeth, daughter in-law Jean Pfeifle, grandchildren, Daniel, Jennifer, Kate, Nicole, Tess, Grace, Alexander and Maxwell, and great-grandchild Cody. Charles was the loving husband of the late Rosemarie Schena. Dearest father of Dr. Charles Josef Schena, and father-in-law of Frances. Charles was born April 25, 1913 in Boston, Massachusetts, and grew up in Charlestown in the shadow of Bunker Hill Monument. Charles served in the Massachusetts National Guard before entering the U.S. Army, and he was a veteran of World War II and Korea. During World War II, he fought at the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Silver and Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart. After military service, he served and retired as a federal employee of the U.S.Tank Automotive Command, Warren. He loved to play golf, frequented Selfridge Air National Guard Base Golf Course, and organized many golf outings for retired and active military personnel. He was also an avid poet and enjoyed a competitive game of bridge. SCHNEIDER HERBERT Age 77, of Detroit. Herbert is survived by his wife of 51 years, Kathryn; daughters, Elizabeth Schneider (Eric Gordin) and Jennifer Stahl (Daniel); and grandchildren, Max, Jacqueline, Nikolas, and Emma. Herb was a voracious reader who had a wealth of knowledge of history, politics, Presidents, and baseball. He was a dedicated New York Times puzzle master (always in ink). An avid sports fan, Herb was a loyal Tigers baseball fan. He will be remembered as an extremely charming and engaging man who was known as a great storyteller. Herb was a lifelong Detroit resident, graduating from Wayne State University with a degree in English. He was an Army Veteran, spending much of his time in France during the Korean conflict. Herb was a hard-working civil servant, spending 20 years with the Social Security Administration. After retiring as a Manager with Social Security, Herb pursued his passion for cooking by working at The Whitney in Detroit. Herb spent many of his last years as a dedicated grandfather to his four grandchildren that he described as the "lights of his life." He adored the time he spent with them, telling stories of his own childhood, cooking favorite recipes, and sharing his love of the game of baseball. Many of us will remember Herb at a dinner table sharing one of his amazing meals and being entertained by his stories. Following his wishes, Herbert will be cremated. SELTZER IRENE G., age 86, of Kerby, Oregon died Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at Three Rivers Medical Center. No services are planned. Illinois Valley Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements. Irene was born November 3, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. She was educated in Michigan and worked as an elementary teacher in the Catholic school system. On December 27, 1945 in Detroit she married Ralph Seltzer. When Ralph's job relocated them, they moved to California where they lived for nine years during which Irene pursued a nursing career. They moved to Selma, Oregon where they owned and operated Great Oak Vineyard. After retirement, they sold the vineyard and winery and moved to Kerby, Oregon in 1996. Irene especially enjoyed traveling including trips to Europe, Japan, South America, and Africa. She also loved to read from her large personal library. Irene is survived by her husband, Ralph Seltzer of Kerby, Oregon; two sons, Andrew T. Seltzer of Los Angeles, California and Martin L. Seltzer of Detroit, Michigan; four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two children, Daniel Seltzer and Suzanne Seltzer.
