LALL DR. REKHA Born in 1947, Rekha died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on the morning of January 25, 2013, after bravely battling recurrent bile duct cancer. Born Rekha Jaiswal to Radha and Rameshwar Prasad Jaiswal, she grew up in India and graduated from King George Medical College at the University of Lucknow in 1970. After pursuing additional training in the United Kingdom, Rekha moved with her family to Dearborn, Michigan, in 1977. She practiced Obstetrics and Gynecology at Oakwood Hospital in Dearborn for over 20 years. She was loved by her patients and colleagues, delivered many healthy and beautiful babies, and relished her role as a primary care physician. From 1987 until 1992, Rekha heroically cared for her late husband, Dr. Mohan Lall, through his battle with cancer. In the years after his death, she continued practicing medicine and raising her children, Maneesh Lall and Neha Lall, who learned from her example. Maneesh is also a physician, and Neha, like her mother, advocates for women's health and safety as a legal aid attorney. In 2004, Rekha married Subhash Mahendru, who was widowed in 2000, and welcomed his daughters, Ruchika Mahendru and Piya Gasper, into her family. In 2006, she was diagnosed with bile duct cancer. She recovered fully and spent her remaining years developing her skills as an artist and travelling with her husband, with whom she shared a deep love of music. Rekha was devoted to the happiness of her children. Shortly after recovering from her illness in 2006, she celebrated the wedding of her step-daughter Piya to Jayson Gasper in 2008. Just weeks before falling ill again, she hosted the joyous marriage celebration of her daughter, Neha, to Robert Knowles. In the final weeks of her life, she blessed the engagement of her son, Maneesh, to Shalini Gandhi. In addition to her loving husband, children, and step-children, she is survived by her devoted siblings, all of whom were present at her death: Arun Jaiswal, of Nasik, India; Neera (and Randhir) Narayan, of California; and Amit (and Rita) Jaiswal, of Lucknow, India. Visitation will be held at Voran Funeral Home located at 23701 Ford Road in Dearborn on Tuesday, January 29 from 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Foundation of Southeastern Michigan (www.cfsem.org) for the benefit of the Drs. Mohan and Rekha Lall Memorial Fund, an endowed charitable fund that will continue to make annual donations in their memory to benefit cancer research and maternal health initiatives.
